Considering the last time this car was onteh street legally, it would easily reach 230kph on the freeway..(243mph) yes I would like the car to have brakes when/if i get to go ona test drive. Right now it only has very faint front brakes. Rear brakelines are just hangin down on the ground. (didn't stop the old fart fromtaking her out for a quick spin today, first time it moved under it'sown power in many many years, he was all smiles :-)---Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.Checked by AVG anti-virus system ().Version: 6.0.385 / Virus Database: 217 - Release Date: 05.09.2002Yep, Jan,...........John And I both worked on this sillycar, and the brakes were TERRIBLE!that car would run fast and strong, no major engineissues,.........but when it was time to stop it wassomething that woulod make your hiney chew on your undies.The conversion John is talking about was something he dug upon the internet News groups too I think.I do remember we talked about whch vehicles had the brakesto convert with, and on his 76 z it was a TOYOTA 4RUNNERbarkes that were direct bolt ons...............only thing tomidify was the zcars' backing plate.yes, they were disc top begin with, but If I'm not mistakenthey were single cylinder calipers, and the toyota ones were4 Cylinder calipers.Should make a major difference in braking.

Z CAR PARTS : The local (two towns over) you-pull-it junkyard has a wad of Datsun Zsin stock. They have several ZXs, which have semi-trailing arms in back,and a couple of early Zs, including one 240 with drum brakes, whicheither has a posi or something's wrong in the diff or trans. Question 1: how do I tell if the car has a posi? Clearing the sticker bushes, jacking, blocking, and chasing off mud daubers to do the old see-if-it-turns test would be a real pain. If all posis had a special VIN code, or a big tag saying they took posi lube only, or other simple ID, then it'd justify all the work to dig one out to test. Failing any simple way, what are the chances of coming across one from a random sampling? Would it be more likely in a ZX than a Z?
Z CAR PARTS : [No Z I'm aware of came from the factory with a posi. Pre-74 had a smallerR-180, later models had the R-200. I'm not sure about the 80s ZXs. JGD] Question 2: I'm also looking for something in the order of a 3.70 gear ratio. Any quick way to tell? How much would a set of 3.70-ish gears cost new?[My 75 service manual says it came with a 3.545:1 rear end. Ben Millspaugh'sbook "Z-car - A legend in its own time" says the 89 300zx had a 4.083:1while the 90 has a 3.692:1 rear end. My 77 manual says they also all had3.545:1 rear ends though it looks like the automatic got the smaller R-180 carrier. Other ratios are available from Nissan Motorsports. JGD] Question 3: given two equivalent rear ends, is there any reason to choose a ZX diff over a Z, or vice versa?
