VW CAR SPARES : I recently had the plastic wheel trims stolen from my 1990 Polo by somethoughtless Today I went into my local VW dealer to ask howmuch it would cost me to replace these four small round pieces ofmoulded plastic and was horrified to be told that they would cost33.77UKpounds.......EACH! You could have knocked me over with thepreverbial feather. That works out at 135UKpounds for a full set ofwheel trims, when I could nip into the local car spares shop and get aset of wheel trims (OK, but not with `VW' on them) for around15-20UKpounds. This means that I would be paying 115-120UKpounds merely to have the magic letters `VW' on the trims. Is this daylightrobbery, or what? 8-OI told the assistant EXACTLY what I thought of the price and he couldonly agree with me and say, "It's not down to us, the price is decidedby Volkswagen UK". He also pointed out that he though it even strangerthat the new Audi wheel trims (which look much more substantial) werepriced at 19UKpounds each. I asked for a complaints contact address andam about to tell the people at VW UK that their prices are outrageous.I am also going to tell them that their pricing of the wheel trims formy Polo is probably a major contributing factor to the theft of myprevious set. Must be a very lucrative scam.

The main point was that producing subcompact cars (VW Polo, Opel Corsa) costs not significantly less than producing compact cars (VW Golf, Opel Astra). (Yes, they are a little bit smaller, but the main cost in producing cars is not the amount of raw materials that goes into it, but rather the handling and assembling of the parts.)
VW CAR SPARES : While compact cars are priced competitively, the customer expects a significantly lower price tags on subcompact cars. Car companies therefore face the choice of either bowing out of the subcompact car competition or sell these cars without any profit margin. The only way they can make money on them is through the parts sales. From the article, it thus seemed that Volkswagen and Opel were in the subcompact car market only because they relied on profits to be made on the parts sale. This seems to be their official pricing policy.So, while you purchased in effect a manufacturer-subsidized car, you can regularly expect to pay more for your Polo parts than for the same parts for the Golf. I guess that it must be different in the UK or the guy at the counterwas lying. My experience here in Maryland (in term of high prices) issimilar, except the prices "vary" from dealer to dealer.
VW CAR SPARES : Within a 30 mile radius there are at least 5 VW dealers that i frequent,and although there prices are similar, depending on which dealer i goto the prices can vary from 5 - 20 % difference on the same item. Alsoif the right sales person is on duty i can get an even better price.My suggestion to anyone experiencing similar problems to the originalposter, would be to join the local VW club, or the National VW club. Localclubs often have deals worked out with area dealers and the Nation VW clubdefinetly has discounts available. I receive discounts from 10 -15 %on Parts, and 10% on labor. VW Club membership, (or any car club for a particular car) offers manybenefits. Membership in our local VW club cost $25. I gained that moneyback this weekend when we had use of over 15 lifts at the local dealership.There was a VW Mechanic on duty who helped us, and loaned us tools. I wasable to replace my rear pads (read: special tool required), and replacemy fuel filter, easily saving over $90 in labor alone!
