VOLKSWAGON CAR PARTS : I am an American and will likely be living in Germany for 2-3 years startingsummer 2002. I want to buy a used car but want to make sure it ill be a goodcar to drive in Germany. Though I would love a BMW, right now I am trying tomaximize my investments and a BMW just isn't a cost effective car for me. SoI have narrowed the choise to these cars (1997-1998 models) based on price, reliability, performance, and fuel economy:For instance, in the US, a Camry is one of the most popular and mostreliabel cars. They are not expensive to fix which is important to me. Butis it a good car to drive in Germany? Are Japanese cars inexpensive to fixin Germany? Now I know the fuel economy of these cars isn't anything special, butbecause I am military I will be paying almost as much for gas as I would inthe US.

Thus, the likely response you will find here will be overwhelmingly in favorof the People's Car. In fairness though, because there are fewer Japenese imports, yourbest bet would be the Passat (even if it is a inferior vehicle to theother two).Since you can get Aafes gas coupons, I wouldn't bother with adiesel...no matter how good the diesel (or turbo diesel) engine is, italways pales in comparison to gasoline engines as far as performanceis concerned. As far as vehicles repairs are concerned, anytime you have to havemaintenance (routine or otherwise) done on the economy, you will payhigh prices. Likewise, turnaround time on vehicle repairs isrelatively slow when compaired to the States. If you are stationed ata larger post, such as RAFB, you can get repairs done at servicegarages on base.

VOLKSWAGON CAR PARTS : One question though: Why not order a Camry (or Maxima) from Aafes fordelivery in Germany? You won't have to pay any sales tax...and youdon't have to worry about pre-existing vehicle problems that mightcrop up. You can get a Camry CE (classic edition) for $17,700...andthe resale value when you return to the States will be high.Well, I will be buying the car in the states used. I would feel weird tryingto buy a used car in Germany because of the language barrier (though I willhave 6 months langauge training prior to going to Germany). Also, eventhough I am military, I will actually be working in a small town near Munichat a German organization. Not sure how close I will be to a base.So given that I would buy a car in the states and not have to worry aboutavailability in Germany, would you still recommend the Passat? Would aJapanese car be more expensive to maintain in Germany?

That being said, I wouldn't buy a Passat andship it to Germany. On the otherhand, I would buy a Camry, Maxima,626, etc. and have it shipped, as your options for a Japanese car arelimited in Germany.No...I wouldn't buy a North American built Passat (smaller head, notas good performance as a German built VW, etc.).Well, it's certainly easier to find a Volkswagon dealer than a Toyotadealer there. Think of how easy/difficult it is to find a Volkswagondealer in America...not always a simple task. Likewise, it might bedifficult to find a Japanese car dealer for vehicle servicing...I guess it comes down to: Buy a Japanese car in the states (whichmeans greater selection for you) and put up with the inconveniences offinding servicing and parts in Germany, or buy a Passat (or an Audisedan) in Germany and have servicing and parts readily available.

VOLKSWAGON CAR PARTS : Of the major Japanese brands, Mazda (which can be service at Forddealers) and Nissan seem to be the leaders of the pact in Germany.Personally, I would buy a Passat in Germany. If your only option isto purchase a car in the States, I would then go with the Camry/Maximaoption.American servicemen and women who drive Ford Explorers and Hondas are adime a dozen. Since you can crank it wide open on the autobahns, Ihighly recommend a 1996 jet-black Chevy Impala, the only GM vehicle Iwould ever consider owning. It's the last muscle car ever built, and youcould probably get that thing going over 170 mph. I guarantee it woulddraw a crowd. Plus, it just plain looks cool. Big, black, low slung withfat tires. You are a moron. Do you know how much gas costs there? I wonder how you'llbe able to maintain that car.
