VOLKSWAGEN CAR PARTS : Hooray for him! Let the guy live out the rest of his life with his preciousVWs. When he dies do what you want with them>. I sure would be interested inseeing what sounds like a very interesting collection. If anyone does go therepost a short inventory of what you see. Fred 67bugLast time I passed through Rising Sun Indiana (about 5 or 6 years ago) therewas a similar guy with 30 or 40 VWs. I had heard for a long time that this guyhad all of these VWs. . If I am not mistaken, the local government made him getrid of some of them. Not sure if they are still there or not. Bill Berckman67 Beetle2693 Aircooled Only VW Links Check out my other Non VW Links page I just started working on. I've been there a couple times, and that guys is a SOB to get ahold of. Istill haven't met him.
VOLKSWAGEN CAR PARTS : Well, I am in the process of rebuilding a 1600 for use in my beetle. Itis my first re-build, but I am very excited about it and confident thatI can build an engine that will carry me down the road. I havelimitations... I don't have all the tools I need, I don't have anyexperience, heck, I don't even have a garage, but I _want_ to do thisthing - and I will. But I want to tell a story to youse guys about some of the minorfrustrations inherent in re-building a 25 year-old piece of machinery. I need new pistons and cylinders. Mine are shot. So I call a local VWshop that I have heard recommendations for. I have called before and gotan answering machine (twice) but I thought I would give them anotherchance. *ring* *ring* *ring* *ring* click... machine picks up. I'mnot leaving another message, they never return their calls. I hang up. I guess they're not that busy. Not a lot of air-cooled fans in CentralAlberta. Call another place - 'sposed to work on air-cooled bugs. I'veseen their work, too "custom" and not enough "resto" for my liking, butmaybe they'll have some parts. VOLKSWAGEN CAR PARTS : I ask how much for new P's and C's for a stock 1600. The first thingout of the service guy's mouth is that I should get the P's and C's fora 1641 for only $75 more. I don't want a 1641. I want a 1600 with stockdisplacement, a vacuum distributor, all the cooling tin, and athermostat. Not a 1641. I don't care if it's only $75 more. I get theprices I want and hang up.It pays to shop around, so I decide to keep calling. I have seen adslately in the VW rags that seem to imply that Volkswagen themselves willsupport us in our hobby, so I try the VW dealer. (It would be nice toget actual VW parts I'm thinkin) All of you veterans out there are nowwincing at how stupid I am. Me: "Hi, can you guys get parts for a 73 air-cooled 1600cc engine?"Him: "Sure, what do you need..." (I'm optimistic at this point)Me: "I need new pistons and cylinders"Him: "Pistons and what?"Me: "Cylinders..." (I'm thinking I have the wrong term... I'm new tothis - should I have said "jugs", "liners"?)Him: "What do you mean? What cylinders?"Me: "The cylinders that the pistons go into.."Him: "But that would be your block."(I distinctly remember the cylinders coming out of the block. In myminds eye I can see them where thay are sitting at home on the shelf.)Me: "No...uh, they come off of the block..." Him: "Well... wait a sec" VOLKSWAGEN CAR PARTS : After a brief pause he comes back on the line and asks if I have ai always get my p's and c's from mail order in the back of themagazines. probably cheaper too!eric allredGene Berg (). "Buy the best, cry once." You also have the privilege of talking to non-idiots when you callthem. You cannot go wrong buying engine parts from these people.Don't feel too silly, most of us have been there. I once bought abug windshield from a VW dealer for $260.00! ($50.00 includingshipping from JBugs.)Get hold of Gene Berg. Fully professional and knowledgeable. Not thecheapest but undoubtedly the best. They will stand by you and theirproduct. VOLKSWAGEN CAR PARTS : Yeah, make sure your telephone has a redial function 'cause you'll need it; theonly phone number stays BUSY. Seems like EVERYBODY wants to get hold of GeneBerg. Tried to get the GB catalog along with my order; sorry out of print but youron our mailing list..... The gal I spoke with to order parts didn't know a gland nut from a walnut.
