Website: John and Fiona Kipping are a husband and wife team who have built up oneofthe biggest Triumph spares businesses in the country. They are veryI have had good service from John Hill's too, but please not that he hasnow moved to:18 Arden Business CentreArden Road Alcester B49 6HW tel: 01789 400449 fax: 01789 400708I bought the parts to rebuild the bottom half of my engine fromthem when I found their prices to be lower than everyone else's.Have to say though, that their telephone manner left a lot to bedesired. I faxed them a list of parts and then phoned to checkavailability, asking what I felt was a reasonable enoughquestion, I.e. could he think of anything crucial that I'dforgotten (like a seal or set of shims or something). He gave mean extrememly grumpy answer that I was the one doing the joband that he just sold the stuff. I was tempted to cancel theorder there and then. Might just have been an off day, of course.
TRIUMPH CAR PARTS : I'm planning on buying a 74 spitfire and would like to hear from otherowners or people who know the car.How hard is it to find used parts on a budget? ( my junkyard has none )**************************************** **************************************** Matt Gaertner ____ University of Illinois ,___/____\__ >cough------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------I haven't owned a 74 Spit, but had a 79 Spitfire for a year or so(until some lady in a boat ran a stop sign and crushed it). It wasa *very* fun car but did have some problems.First problem was the water pump, which had to be replaced, butluckily those engines are so plain and simple, almost anything canbe replaced (relatively) easily. The other problem is more a question of environment I suppose. Ipacked it to the brim (which isn't a lot) and moved from Los Angelesto Tucson Arizona in August. Which meant I crossed 400 miles ofblazing desert. Near the end of that trip (I didn't make it all theway to Tucson), my sparkplug wires actually cought on fire. Clearlythe Brits rarely experience anything in the 80 deg F. range, muchless Arizona desert heat. So that can't be a knock on the car. TRIUMPH CAR PARTS : Simple to maintain and fun to drive! Parts are a little hard to findbut you'll find that total strangers approach you and offer to sellyou parts from their spits all the time.I'm thinking of buying a 74 Triumph Spitfire that needs a new clutch. If anyone has any expierence with this car I'd greatly appreciate your reply.I'm mainly concerned with chronic problems and what to check before I buy it.Also, how hard is it to find used parts on a small budget?**************************************** **************************************** Matt Gaertner ____ University of Illinois ,___/____\__ >cough (Matt ) writes: I just bought a 78 Spitfire this may and had to change the clutch. If you are going to replace the clutch you mind as well spend a little more money($20-$30) and change those small parts inside the clutch(ie. Pivot pin-lever and sleeve). You don't want to reopen the car to change some small part that has failed. TRIUMPH CAR PARTS : In my case the clutch was replaced 4 years ago and it was worn out because the master clutch cylinder did not return to its home position, so the clutch was never fully enaged. Changing the seals seems to help a bit but I will have to change it as soon as I have the spare cash. My car has been running quite well except for the carburator and the automatice choke causing the car to run too rich. Yours should have a manule choke which is much better (lucky you). Some of the items that I was told to lookout for are the leave springs and U-joints, they have a tendancy to wear out quickly. Another major concern is the electrical system, the previous owner told me that he has had an electrical fire. I've also been told by others on the net about electrical problems with british cars. TRIUMPH CAR PARTS : I'm lookin for engine parts for a '70 Spit MkIII. I need valves, camshaft, and bearings. If anyone out there has info on Spit parts/Clubsetc let me know.Tried mailing you but your email address is bad, here is the info:Hello fellow Spitfire owner, here is some info I think you might finduseful. I usally get my parts from Obsolete Automotive or locallyfor small parts and stuff that I need right away. Have tried Peninsula Import and the service was very fast, got my parts in 2 days. If the Canadian dollar improves I like dealing with Special Interest Car Parts in the States, they usually have the best prices and they also have monthly specials. Here are some prices from Special Interest Car Parts if you want tocompare prices ($US):
