SUBARU CAR PARTS : The other issue is that even the Subaru Forester sits rather low to theground. The SUV wankers want to be on thrones high above the crowd, theydon't want to be close to the ground. After all, how can they feelsuperior to "those" people if they're down on the same level as "those"people? Of course, having a high center of gravity like that means thatthose tall SUV's flip like a teenage gymnast, but what the hey, who eversaid people bought cars for functional reasons? The issue with the H6 was that they had to keep it small enough to fitinto the engine bay of their existing cars. The length, in particular, wasan issue. So the current H6 doesn't really have a lot of "grow-room" --you can't bore it out to, say, 4.2 liters like Chevy's new SUV 6 cylinder,because the cylinders are packed too close together, and you can't strokeit to get more torque because that would make the engine too wide to fitinto the engine bay. The current 3.0 liter H6 actually isn't a bad engine,you just have to wind it up a bit to hit its power band, and Americans aren'tused to doing that with a 6 cylinder engine. But if you treat it right,it does a pretty good job of motivating the Sube down the road.
SUBARU CAR PARTS : I don't see where Subaru has the resources to build an all-new engineunique to an all-new vehicle. Because it fits in all of Subaru's cars,the 3.0L H6 is probably "it" for the foreseeable future. Subaru couldperhaps turbocharge it or supercharge it for a larger SUV, but thathas its own issues (actually, they'd pretty much have to superchargeit, because Americans want their torque when they press on the gaspedal, not a couple of seconds later after the turbo has had a chanceto wind up). Furthermore, it is unclear whether Subaru could build alarger "real" SUV that way that was actually appealing to the "real"SUV crowd, which wants big beefy engines, a high seating position, and"traditional" chunky SUV proportions (rather than the low-slungnose-heavy look dictated by Subaru's low-slung H6 design, that shovesthe entire engine low and in front of the front axle due to the designof the integrated transmission/transaxle and the need to jam it allunder a fairly low-slung Legacy hood). SUBARU CAR PARTS : Probably the only thing Subaru could do here would be to do a Mazda --get with GM (their largest minority shareholder) and badge-engineer amatching pair of SUV's, one with the Subaru nameplate and one with theGM nameplate. The Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute aren't bad vehicles, andthe Mazda Tribute version actually has a lot of Mazda parts (Mazdacontributed the suspension, body pan, and transaxle to thebadge-engineered pair, basically taking a Mazda 626 and jacking itinto the air a bit and poking some Ford bits into the enginecompartment). But then, Mazda wasn't Subaru -- they were far moreconventional (with the exception of the rotary-powered cars). It isunclear whether Subaru could badge-engineer a car with GM that wouldpreserve any of the distinguishing characteristics of a Subaru whiletaking advantage of the deep GM parts bin. GM's parts bin is just toodifferent from Subaru's (e.g. Subaru's H-6 vs. GM's new I-6 for theChevy Trailblazer), unlike the Mazda/Ford deal, where the two had beensharing a common parts bin for decades. SUBARU CAR PARTS : Does the extended warrantee cover a replacement vehicle? Can younegotiate with the dealer for a (free or low cost) loaner? Holding acar a week or more in a shop without offering a loaner isunreasonable, IMO.If you have credit cards, they may cover this. Call the CC co to besure.Pat, have you asked the repair shop to give you a loaner until your car isfixed? The dealership where our cars get repaired always gives a loaner ifyour car has to be in for more than a day or two. In fact, they are a Forddealership, and have decided that it is worth having a few really nice carsfor loaners (I guess maybe it generates sales + goodwill) and last time mycar was in, I had a Mustang Convertible to use while they fixed up my oldstation wagon. SUBARU CAR PARTS : This is one example where it makes sense to buy an American car; one that's actually made in the states. That way, if a problem should arrise, obtaining parts for a repair can usually be done very quickly and finding someone qualified to do the repairs is also easier.--Jerry Leslie (my opinions are strictly my own) Note: is invalid for emailThat is not always necessarily true. I had an American car when I livedin a quasi-rural part of PA and parts couldn't be delivered withoutseveral days delay. When I bought a Japanese car, parts came withinhours. I asked around at various repair shops and even the dealershipsfor these models and the delay/lack-of was the same.I bought an American car again, moved to a city-metro area in PA, andhad to wait for parts again. Usually though, if you live in a rural area, parts take longer to getthere. No matter where the car was made.
