SPORT CAR PARTS : Renault/Toyota/Jaguar: They've got the right idea having an entirelyself-owned team. I think that is the only way to really build a strongsporty association with F1 these days.Honda: I think that they will follow R/T/J and buy out one of their twinteams at the end of next year and ditch the other.Ferrari: A special case - they are not really in the sport to sell roadcars, though it helps. But undoubtedly they probably get the best value from thesport of anbybody.--------I can't follow you here. As long as the star is on the cars, the team isknown as X-Mercedes and Norbert Haug willingly gives interviews clad in aMercedes shirt, the public will associate the name Mercedes with theperformance of McLaren.Currently they do indeed get poor value, but that is because they are noton par with Ferrari in this season. The recent championships wereattributed to a great part on the engine, and so (as stated above) toMercedes.
SPORT CAR PARTS : They will maximise their influence in the team right now. I don't thinkthat buying a team with a history like McLaren would give Mercedes goodpublicity in the UK.Not in the slightest, no...but then I hope I don't buy on image. (F1is all about associating a marque with an image. It works, or theexisting companies wouldn't be there and others wouldn't be jumping onthe bandwagon.)On the other hand, I'm certainly influenced by rallying (which is whyI own a Subaru Impreza Turbo); used to be influenced by touring carracing when the cars bore some resemblance to the real thing (which isone of the reasons why I own a real Mini); and, similarly, enduranceracing (which is why I own an XK-engined Jaguar- even if it has been'awaiting restoration' for some years)."In the end it's always a matter of more accelerator and less brake" - Frank Gardner SPORT CAR PARTS : I try to patronize when practical, companies that participate in any form ofracing, whether they make cars, car parts or even if they are a non-automotivecompany sponsoring racing. As a motor racing fan, I feel indebted to anyorganization that betters the sport. When it comes to purchasing a car, I am naturally attracted to (but usually, can't afford) those models made by companies that demonstrate technology intheir road cars, derived from their racing activities. Ferrari and Lotusimmediately spring to mind, and also Porsche, but even makes like Acura made useof some of Honda's F1 experience in their orig. V-6. Subaru shows rallyingtechnology in their cars and in the past so did Peugeot, which are all cars Iwould consider purchasing.Ferrari and Lotus however stand out from all the rest. Not only did they usedto be the only two F1 companies that made road cars, but still are the only twothat raced first and made road cars later basically to finance the racing. Froman enthusiast's view, you can't beat that. SPORT CAR PARTS : Renault, with the minor exception of the Williams Clio, seemed to have madealmost nothing of their success in F1 - their range of cars have remainedstylistically and technically rather dull - so no attraction whatsoever tobuy one. Honda similarly, with some exceptions in the engine design area.Jag (aka Ford, via Cosworth..) are hoping that their F1 programme will helptheir X-Type model sales I guess, but I wonder.. They would be better ofin sports cars methinks.BMW are definitely earning points in customers minds with their F1programme, but they were always into engine design anyway (unlike Mercedeswho farm it out to Ilmor).Toyota is a strange one, both my Toyota dealer and I wonder why Toyota wantto go into F1, I mean, why do you buy a Toyota - because it's competent, cheap to run and reliable. Where does F1 fit in here in any way... SPORT CAR PARTS : Subaru have, IMO, had the best bang for the buck of all moto manufacturers- relatively little outlay for a huge payback. What would a huge investmentin F1 have helped them?!Ferrari (aka Fiat), again IMO, have the worst payback - most outlay, leastgained from it. I know all these Ferrari buyers LIKE the fact that Ferrariare in F1 (and now winning after many years) but I suspect that they'dstill buy one if Ferrari were in sports car racing or something and had asports "image".Mercedes, strangely above Porsche and BMW, are constantly (in Germany )voted the manufacturer with the sportiest image, so is their outlay payingback? - very many silver mercedes are sold now - unlike 7-8 years ago! Theanswer must be yes.
