Well, it so happens that the mechanical systems are virtually identical.Remember, the original post(s) grumbled about old, antiquated equipment, which wasexpensive to operate because there were no spare parts and that they had to be fabricatedat extremely high cost.In any case, we were talking about equipment in North America and the supposed lack ofspare parts and that is not the case.It depends on what you call Heritage equipment. Montreal has some Hawker-Siddely builtbilevel gallery cars, which have worked out quite well for them and which the passengersand crew prefer to the ex-GO "Tempo" design cars. (The ex-GO cars really do have a poorquality ride).It's not really changing at all. The Budd equipment will be shifted to long distancewestern trains, whereas the Nightstar equipment will be used principally Toronto and east.But, the Budd equipment is not being retired and spare parts are not an issue.

And, mypoint is that they are not necessarily inferior from a design, maintenance, safety andoperating perspective; merely that they needed mostly cosmetic and, in some cases,relatively minor mechanical upgrades.I have yet to meet anyone who has expressed displeasure with bilevel cars. They arerobustly constructed, efficient and inexpensive to operate, with COMMON components, whichare easy to procure and maintain. We obviously travel in different circles.No, sir, you are full of it. I travel around the country and have had numerousconversations, unsolicited, about various types of equipment and you are simply wrong.

They're actually quite spacious, similar to Chicago's newerNippon-Sharyo cars, which share a common body shell.How so? By climbing three stairs at the loading doors? Ok, they have to go up some stairsto the mezzanine level. So what, there are seats up there.Duck your head and you'll get a seat. No one has a problem in Chicago, California,Washington or Montreal.False. Three abreast loading. Observed in all of the aforementioned cities and shorterdwell time per passenger than single level cars.Also false. Same accommodations for single level and any other equipment for ADAcompliance. Check each system.I don't think you've spent a lot of time observing commuter railroads or you wouldn't bemaking these statements. Chicago is using the ex-CNW, MILW, RI and Burlington cars withgreat success and no complaints from passengers about the equipment. Many consider Metrato be a model commuter railroad. And, they are a very well run railroad by any standard.
SPARE PARTS CARS : Back to the original point I made, they use many common components, such as TBUs (TreadBrake Units), wheels (33" B wheel, used on every TTX car in the North America), brakevalves, lighting, control stands, HVAC systems, seating, truck components, couplers, draftgear, door engines, flooring, which are compatible across many types of cars used in NorthAmerica.Contrary to earlier posts made regarding expensive parts and no availability, these carsare inexpensive to operate and simple to maintain.And, I dispute the assertion that they are uncomfortable. That is just not so. I haveridden these cars in all of the above mentioned cities and your points do not coincidewith my observations.It is not necessary to equip your railroad with new equipment, because the cars look andsmell new, when older boxes, bettered with new seating, lighting and floor coverings willaccomplish the same objectives faster and at a much lower cost. Generally, on therailroads, the people who agitate the most for new equipment are in maintenance. Chancesare, if they have a new car and something goes wrong, the equipment is under somewarranty. That means less trouble for them to maintain the car.
SPARE PARTS CARS : I have the metroliner, and 2 club cars. So far it works great. I plan to addone more car built around a set of spare parts from Adding lights shouldn'tmake much difference scince the voltage is regulated, therefor the engine getsthe same voltage with the lights on and the lights are powered threw a small wirewhich acts as a current ballest.If my Metroliner gets too slow with the 6th car I'll just add another motor at the other end. That's what I do with my frieght train, I use the trollycar/Austrianrail engine as a cabose. With the Load N Haul and the 7722 battery train, plusone each of a few of the extra cars kits I have 13 cars not counting the enginesand 2 maintainace cars. This setup has mostly single axel trucks and half are theolder style, but it still runs OK on a clean track.
