China's accession to the WorldTrade Organisation last year was expected to inflict a sharp shock onthe domestic car industry. Commentators said the arrival of the"wolves" - big foreign companies - would presage the exit of domesticcompetitors.But just seven months after China joined the WTO, reality has stoodconventional wisdom on its head. The biggest shocks have been felt bythe large foreign brand names, including Volkswagen, and the greatestsuccess has come to two unheralded Chinese companies working onshoestring budgets.On one level, this observation is a mere curiosity. But on another itprovides an insight into the changing dynamics of a car industry thatobservers are starting to predict may follow Japan and South Korea tobecome an exporter of cheap vehicles to the world.
