SECONDHAND CAR PARTS : If you can get all the necessary parts secondhand the it would make itcheaper, but don't buy secondhand parts that have been sitting in an opensystem in a smashed car for ages, as they will be internally corroded. Ifyou can find a suitable donor car that has been smashed in the rear and theaircon system is still charged, then you should be safe. Most HVAC units (heating, ventilation, aircon) are fitted before thedash is fitted, which goes in before the windscreen is fitted. If you get the pov-pack that doesn't have factory-installed aircon,it's an awkward and expensive operation to get an aftermarket unit putin. You sure as hell don't get a custom australian-built AC system in amind-numbingly high-volume Korean cheapie...which is why you see somany of them advertised with "free air"...
SECONDHAND CAR PARTS : Not true for ALL cars. Nissan dealers fit the AC for the Pulsar before youpick it up(& I think other models too).I think Toyota are forced to do the same. Hence the $2000 premium for ACfrom Toyota.Prolly not custom built but Aust installed by the dealer. Its cheaper forthe Manufacturer that way, make the dealer fork out the $$$ for install. Toyota always have charged premium for A/C , infact they have always charged top dollar for any"factory" extras. It is for profit, no other reason. A/C has only really been popular in small carsfor the last 5-10 years , something which is taken for granted today. If your looking at '80s smallcars there is a good chance it*wont* have aircon ,cars were more expensive (relative to wages) backthen so people just didn't option it - especially small car buyers. It is not really viable toretro - fit now . So if you must have A/C hold out until one pops up factory fitted. SECONDHAND CAR PARTS : "Kieren" wrote in message...ACI wont disagree with you on this point, Toyota Landcruiser 100 Turbo Diesel$68530 + $3000 for AC.Youd think that if you spending that kind of bucks you would get AC thrownin.I was saying that the dealer has to fit the factory AC units them selves. The AC unit is sitting on the back seat when delivered.I know Nissan does this as when our can was delevered we went andhad alookand the box was on the backseat.Go and buy a camry or a pulsar for example, they don't come with aircon fromthe factory unless you buy the upper model, but there is a factory airconkit, and installation is organised by the dealer before you pickup the car!And who said anything about custom Australian built units anyway? SECONDHAND CAR PARTS : Ah, but you are talking about pattern discs I would think. Why changethe rules for one make of car eh?A proper set of pads are (were!) 62.00, plus discs were about 28.00each, plus fitting. And yes, they have been failing at 10k.OK, I put my hand up to that one, £28 is about right... but the pads are£27.59 !Also I have just changed my sister's discs at 45,000 and I doubt they'vebeendone before... Definitely not since 20,000 ! It must be the way they'redriven... AndyThere is some of that in it, but even 20k on discs is poor in my books.Motorcraft ! Fords OEM, that come with anti squeal pads and are meantto be harder wearing are between £45 - 50 - he guessed ! I wonder whichthey fit when you have a service though, which is really the point.Andy. SECONDHAND CAR PARTS : No, they were about 60 quid IIRC, and they did help to reduce the wearon the discs a bit.On a service the dealer should ask what you want, I always do!I concede that you are probably right but the point is purely an academicone !My local main dealer say that Motorcraft are the only ones they use whenservicing cars and have no further details of the OEMs.As for you always asking ! I suggest you are something of a rarity....You are lucky to get a civil greeting at most garages... let alonesuch detailed analysis of one's requirements... Where are you ? :-)AndyIt is, but one surefire way to better your odds is to look at plenty, anddon't buy a shitter even if you have travelled a fair way to view it.Always check common wearing parts, like shocks, wheel bearings, brakepads/discs/shoes/drums/calipers/cyl inders (leaky cylinders can be a pain tosort out), exhaust, tyres, CV joints etc., which can add up to quiteexpensive bills if a fair few things like this need doing. Also, anyknocking in the suspension could mean that bushes are worn, and whilst someare simple to replace, many are press-fit jobs and a big-ish job. Apartfrom common wearing parts, the other main things to check out are thebodywork (if it's gone through a recent MOT, the failure sheet will give anidea of whether or not anything failed or was advised on rust-wise) - alsojust ask if it's ever needed any welding doing - this could be a turn-off,but at the same time, if it's had brand new sills, and anything that wasslightly going properly done, then it should be good for a few years. Theother thing is has the engine been looked after - a full service history isideal, but if not, bring someone with you who's got a good idea aboutwhether an engine sounds looked after or not - the less rattling the better! Then drive the thing and if your gut feeling is good, and all common wearingparts have either been recently replaced, or the price adjusted accordingly, then it should be ok.
