SECOND HAND CAR SPARES : Bear in mind in any reply that I'm 6ft 2In and my wife is 5ft 8in inbare feet - regrettably I'm a good bit larger of girth than she is!Both cars seem to have good legroom, unlike my Xantia Co. car which hasa hole in the carpet by the clutch 'cos there's nowhere for me to put mysize 10 - and the car is only 14 months old!Prompt comments appreciated - I'm going for a test drive at 13:00 Sat!There is no contest,,buy the Golf. Don't take my word for itthough!!,as VW's new advert says,,how many VW's do you see aroundthese days ? I.E referring to the number of V and W reg s on the roadof course. You can see thse regs and older VW's still in finecondition and the bodywork lasts for a long long time withoutproblems..joe (K reg Golf 1800 CL (cat inj))
SECOND HAND CAR SPARES : Having had both (petrol tho' not diesel) I'd go for the Astra. IMHOVWs are way overpriced, the spares are substantially more expensivethan Vauxhall/Ford and they have less added value for the same modeltype. Also, last time I looked Vauxhall's anti-rust warranty (6 yearswith NO required checkups - transferrable to new owners) beat thesocks off VWs one.In article: (Hugh Davies) writes:Those of us who regard a car as a means of transport, rather than a technotoy or a personality-deficiency substitute value their reliability, ease of driving, and fuel economy, especially in naturally aspirated form. My Astra 1.7 van (GM engine, not the later Isuzu) (114kmiles) normally returns 55-60mpg, whether around town or pottering along the motorway at 60ish. My Peugeot 305 diesel estate (197k miles) gives around 55mpg with similar use, even when a fair proportion is towing a decent-sized trailer. No expensive electronics requiring garage diagnostic equipment at 45quid/hour or whatever dealers charge. SECOND HAND CAR SPARES : Even at 8000 miles/year, the fuel cost saving is significant to us who are too intellectually-challenged, idle, or both, to be rich.Astra spares are (relatively) cheap, (apart, I believe, from the alternator/vac pump on the Isuzu engine), they use (on mine, anyway) a common size of tyre, and I have no complaints about reliability. My '86 Sierra 2.3 diesel (maybe 215K, maybe 315K miles; I don't know andI'm not bothered) returns around 43mpg on local runs and 45-47mpg onlonger cross-country/motorway trips. The poxy '84 2.0 petrol I drovebriefly (as if it were the diesel, being used to that vehicle over thepast 8 years) last summer gave a mere 23-25mpg local and 30-32mpg cross-country on 4*. No contest. And that's only to find out how much they think they can get away withshafting you for replacements; then comes the bill for UKL650-odd, pluslabour, plus extra prof^W^H^H^H^H 'sundries', plus VAT, for a new'engine management module' with about UKL10-worth of bits init............ SECOND HAND CAR SPARES : My car has no engine electronics *at all*; that's how I like it, andIMHO that's how it should be. If they're not there, they can't go phutand cost you funny money to fix. No stupid russian-roulette device(cambelt), either, to break and destroy an engine now and then, generating lots more lovely spares business. Nice friendly metalpushrods, driven by a proper duplex chain (gears would be even better).A straightforward, competently-engineered mechanical injection pump.*Proper* engineering - not plastic, rubber and silicon whizz-kidrubbish.I'll drive it into the ground, and then get another, or at leastsomething very similar.Ad hominem, as a pre-emptive strike on behalf of the 8-valve (EL84) brigade against the 32 valve (KT88) lot. But not ad virem, or at least not ad any particular virem, unless the galea fits ;-)quite agree, but depreciation is often a very high proportion of the cost, and very difficult to predict. SECOND HAND CAR SPARES : derv doesn't seem as bad as it used to be; it doesn't even froth as muchat least you usually can start it, even if it's raining, and I rather like the sound of a diesel engine. and the emissions don't contain the world's most carcinogenicwossat then? Where do the aromatics in unleaded petrol come in this ranking?Biggest disadvantage of diesels, imho, are the need for an expensive battery in reasonable condition, the problem (and cost) of the very, very occasional attention to the pump and injectors, and the need to reset the maximum speed control on the pump before each MoT to stop the tester revving the b------s of it. Talking of diesel MoTs, Sainsbury's City Diesel is well worth the extra quid for a tankful just before the test - it does seem to reduce the smoke emissions.
