SECOND HAND CAR PART : Why oh why do people like you not understand why many people want to buynew??Why oh why do people like you not understand that people who buy a cheapsmall car new simply DONT WANT a much larger 5 year old car??Why oh why do people like you not understand that in most respects the cartrade is like most trades - supply and demand - the reason many older carsare aparently so cheap is because not many people want them (if there was arush for them, prices would go up).I can understand the logic of buying used - dont get me wrong - but just beglad that huge number of peoiple differ from you - otherwise there would beno used cars on the market for people like you to "benefit" from.
SECOND HAND CAR PART : Buying a second hand car is like buying a second hand almost anything elseanything - you are buying someone elses cast-off. Thats fine if you likedoing that sort of thing. Only "collectables", property and the like arefundamentally different to this logic.The percentage saving you can make buying a used car is substantially lessthan the percentage saving you can make buying used clothes - and it isworth noting that many second hand clothes are, relatively speaking, farless "used" than a used car - sometimes worn only once, or not at all. Doesthat mean we are all going to rush out to hunt for a hardly (if at all) warncoat that would cost 200 new for a tenner??I know of several people who spend more on new clothes per month than theydo on their loan for a new car.
SECOND HAND CAR PART : Because I used to be a new car salesman, and I've seen the stupid bloodypurchases people tend to make. New Micras for £12000 etc. Then watched themcry 12 months down the line when they get offered £5000 for them as a tradein.The above cars were merely examples of things you could buy for Focus money.If you want examples of smaller cars, then why not a Fiesta Ghia X, last ofthe old shape, 2 years old, £5300. Leather, Air Con, ABS, Alloys, 6 discchanger, cheaper than a Perodua probably. A far better car as well.If nobody bought new cars, how much do you think a 3 year old Focuswould be worth?Depreciation is only high because there are so many second-hand carsavailable. And that's because people keep buying new ones.

To us, the value is in having a brand new car.Pete - most of your arguments are based around people doing silly things -i.e. buying a run of the mill boring Ford brand new and then wanting to sellit after 12 months.People can make silly decisions when buying second hand as well you know -in fact most people who buy second hand from dealers are making the dealermuch more money than most make on a new car - because the average secondhand buyer is paying way above average "trade" price - something not truefor a new car.If we leave "silly decisions" - in terms of model chosen, length of timekept and price paid- aside (both new and used), it is certainly true thatmost people who buy second hand will spend less money on depreciation thanthose that buy new - but that really isnt the point, most of the populationdo actually realise that, but many still buy new.
SECOND HAND CAR PART : I maintain that buying new, assumung you make a sensible choice and theright deal, and as long as you are not spending more than you can afford, isa perfectly sensible thing to do. Just because there are potentiallycheaper ways to get mobile doesnt in itself make buying new daft.I personally never buy used - have been tempted to buy something that Icould not afford (or more specifically could not justify affording!) to buynew ( a top spec Range rover say) - but at the end of the day a new carcomes with a full warranty, the very latest features, and no worries abouthow it has been driven, or if it has had any accident damage repaired - andcertainty it is not clocked - and so on.Why do you think there are so many crooks in the used car game - because itseasy to rip people off!
