SAAB parts are very high quality and often are custom made for or by SAAB.Thus it is impossible to find a generic part that will fit.Offsetting the above is the fact that most SAABs will, without too many repairs,last nearly forever. I believe there were a few models that had more than theirshare of problems and perhaps someone with more experience in that line can helpyou out. One person has told me that the 9000 is much better than the 900 but Ihave only heard it from that one source (who is a mechanic.) Aother bonus isthat SAABs will perform with the best for road holding, especially on snow andice and they are built like fortresses so you're less likely to be hurt.
SAAB CAR PARTS : Oh gawd, oh gawd, ohmiGAWD... you bring up the most painful carexperience I ever had in my life, a Saab 900 Turbo that cost the earthto begin with, NEVER was really the car I'd expected and ended upcosting over $2,200 in repairs (including a new rear AXLE) before it was18 months old. Look, there's a whole mythology business out there around cars.Especially Swedish ones, which are promoted in certain ways to enticepeople into identifying with smart, upmarket Swedes. We're supposed tovisualize these cars withstanding endless Nordic winters and whatnot.DON'T FALL FOR IT. I've had a half dozen Volvos too - and they ALL wereexpensive to keep up. Not necessarily because they're bad cars per se,but buying ANY car which only sells a tiny percentage of the marketmeans you're stuck with monopoly pricing on parts and service. At that,IN SWEDEN, where these cars are common, Saabs last half the lifespan ofVolvos. Figure ten years for a Saab, versus over 19 years for Volvos. Buying in America, you've got several other negative things goingon. Amongst them: poor to nonexistent standards for mechanics. Shippingcosts. MUCH cruder consumer protection laws than Sweden. A higher levelof blue collar illiteracy, such that if you go on a trip outside therange of your local Saab dealer and you run into trouble, not only willthey not have the parts, they are unable to follow the manual youbrought along. A prejudice that will lead service people to think you'rea yuppie who knows zip about cars and are a willing victim of theirpredation. Saabs are also generally considered ugly by everybody youmight want to sell it to when your wallet flattens and you're desperateto get rid of it. THAT is why they're so damn cheap used - they can'tGET more money... check Blue Book figures!
SAAB CAR PARTS : If you're really interested in a car with lower maintenance costs,forget Swedish. In my experience, ONE Volvo costs as much to keep goingfor 20 years as four Japanese cars. (And I still have the first newVolvo I ever bought, so I do have an idea what it takes to keep 'emgoing for 20 years. It's on blocks... I keep it for sentiment now, nottransportation.) I'd never have a Saab again as long as I live. Every brand has some intense loyal clique. There are folks who swearby every one of the worst DOGS in the Consumer Reports repair historylists. And yeah, I know companies change over time. But the supportnetwork you need to get service and parts doesn't. You WILL pay monopolyprices for a car that has only one dealer within 300 miles of your home.You get away with it in Los Angeles, sorta kinda - but nothing deflectsthe final showdown at the cashier window.
SAAB CAR PARTS : No kidding. Volvos and Saabs are cult cars in the US. That cult status costs you extra money.It's unfortunate, but true, that Saab and Volvo are both good cars thatare not sold in enough quantity in the USA to make them economicallycompetitive. Any basic Honda, Toyota, or Nissan will cost you less tobuy and maintain, and will last as long. The only thing you could buythat would be cheaper to maintain is a 10 or 15 year old American pickup truck with the basic V8 engine. I bought a 24-year-old pickup truck last spring for$650. It's amazing how out of tune a 360 cubic inch V8 can be andstill haul a ton of gravel. When you drag a beat-up old truck intothe shop, the mechanics start suggesting low-cost ways of fixing itup without being asked. Nobody ever suggested ways for me to savemoney repairing my Isuzu Trooper. Also, there's no such thing asunavailable parts for an American pickup -- the junkyards areoverflowing with everything you'd ever need. A friend of mine hadan old Saab that was just about irreparable because the few Saabs inthe junkyard had all been mined for the very parts he needed. Heswitched to Mercedes, where you can always trade your house for newfactory parts.

What I do object to is the high costof most parts, but they do last a long time compared to other cars that I haveowned.As for the SAAB, I've only owned one (a '78 99) and it was a great car to drive,but was difficult to repair and it required special tools and techniques.All-in-all I loved the SAAB while it was running right which was most of thetime. When the time came to repair things (fairly frequently) I hated it, thensold it for nearly nothing. At the time (1988) the repair cost came close tomatching the used value. Thus I'm not crazy about SAABs but would buy one if Ididn't have to worry about costs because I loved driving it. Other cars are inthe same category. Those include Jaguar and Porsche (and forget the flamesplease).Dick MacDonald
