ROVER CAR SPARES : I presume the engine is either a 3.5 or 3.9 litre petrol? These have provenreliability and , if serviced regularly, 90k should not be a problem. Checkthat the auto gearbox oil is spotlessly clean. When on a test drive, listenfor excessive noise from the transfer gearbox. Check that the transfer boxand differential lock actually work, even if you never intend to use them!Any vibration at certain speeds could be caused by worn drive shaftuniversal joints. Underneath the car, make a careful check for oil leaksaround the drive shaft oil seals. Examine the fuel tank carefully as it'snot unknown for these to corrode and leak.Paintwork repairs need to be done by somebody who knows how to deal withaluminium bodywork. The advice of other Range Rover owners local to you canbe invaluable here.

There isn't really such thing as a bad year for a Range Rover (not sincethe mid 80's, anyway, when most British cars were crap!).2. In your country, no idea. In the UK, servicing is reasonably priced forthis type of car. Spares can be VERY expensive but non Landrover made partsare often available at very good prices (and quality).3. No, it's not too old. With care, it'll run for many more years. In theUK, the price would be very good.4. Probably no more trouble than any other car. Most likely a lot lesstrouble but major problems can be expensive. With a 9 year old car, who cantell what's in store?

ROVER CAR SPARES : John gives a lot of good advice on Rangies here. Some other points I'd suggest are:Check the steel crossmember that forms the lower part of the tailgateframe. These are a box section above the chassis, but below the mainbodyshell, and are rather prone to rust on the lower edge. They'realso a pain to replace.4.2 engines are not the best idea. I'd avoid a 4.2 in favour of a 3.9or 4.6 The early air suspension of that era wasn't too reliableeither. think yours will be a 3.9 with springs, at this age (good)Getting to 90K depends on a good oil change history in the past. Ifthey go, it will be camshaft wear, stuck tappets, and possibly thevery common (but not that serious) leaks around the inlet mainfoldside of the head (not usually visible, and can be ignored)

ROVER CAR SPARES : A 90K manual 5 speed would probably be getting lumpy on 1st/2nd gearby now. An auto should still be perfect, unless previously abused.Post '89 Rangie, so it should be the chain-driven transfer box, notthe old geared one. The chain drive boxes are quieter and have aviscous diff lock rather than a manual lock. Some late-80simprovements were a lot more complexity for little benefit, but thetransfer box was a big improvement - especially fast on wet roads orsnow.I have a choice of the following (both are reasonably priced):Both appear to be in good shape. What should I look for?Especially on the 1992.I know in the past a person named Martin advised stayingaway of the newer County's. I'd appreciate any additionalthoughts from this newsgroup before I make my final decision.

Ifthat's an early "new shape", then avoid it, if it's the last of the"Classic" shape then grab it.Rangies of this era - avoid early air suspension and 4 engines.I disagree, firstly why avoid early new shapes? Agree about the suspension, the classic system was ok, but the new shapetype is far superior.Why avoid 4.2s? They had a stronger crank, (developed by I think JE forthe Iceberg project. It had no gasket problems like early 4.6sThe only think against them that I know of, is that I can't get hold ofone to replace my soaked 3.9!!I think the county was like a vogue se. Not too sure though.'95 new shape ? How many gearboxes do you want to get through ?You've also got "Lucas Electrics" problems to a rather worse extentthan the usual.
