ROVER CAR PARTS : I used to see lots of them on the road, but it seems that as peoplestart having difficulty finding parts, the just scrap them. Last nightI had to "Modify" a set of Off the shelf rear brake pads by, 1) notinstalling the noise cancelling backing plates and 2) grindind downthe surfaces with a belt sander, just so that the darned things wouldfit. Seems that every aftermarket brake pad manufacturer builds thesethings thicker than the original factory pads. Even with worn rotors,the "New" aftermarket pads don't leave enough space to reinstall thecaliper assmeblys. (You'd think that after returning the second set toa parts store I would have figured that one out, but on the fourth tryI realized that no mater where I went, I was never going to get the"Correct" pads)

The first year available was1987, and I believe they sold them through the 1990 model year. WhenFord started buying up all the great British Automobile companys in anattempt to improve their image, they realized that the Sterling hadHonda parts in it, so they simply discontinued importing them, andabsolutely refuse to provide any parts support for these cars.
ROVER CAR PARTS : Before I bought the car I called the local Land Rover dealer, to checkon parts availability... they were a little put off, but gave me thename and number of a guy who purchased their entire parts inventorywhen Ford said "Get that stuff out of here." When I called him, heassured me that parts were very much available so I went ahead andpurchased the car. Now, when ever I call this guy for parts, he putsme on "Hold" for extended periods of time, then says "I'm checking mystock" or "I think I have it in my warehouse." I've learned that whatthe guy is doing, is putting me on hold, and calling the Acura dealer,or a few british car parts stores in town (it gets pretty obvious whatis going on when you call a parts house later in the day, and they say"Didn't you call about this part earlier in the day?")

I've replaced the brakepads on more cars than I can remember, but I've never run into aproblem like this before.Ford have nothing to do with Rover ! ROVER CAR PARTS : Does your sterling have 262mm or 285mm discs up front? Sounds like you'vejust fitted 285mm pads to the 262mm disc, there's abnout 1mm difference inheight of the pads which can jsut about but badly fit if you loose theanti-rattle shims. Dunno why they were too thick.Mark, Thank you for directing me to Yahoo Groups... I'll check itout.I have no idea which size disks I have up front. I installed the frontpads with no problem. It was the rear pads that gave me fits. Evenafter I removed the "anti-rattle shims" I had to massage about sixthousand miles of wear into them with my belt sander before I couldget them to fit over worn rotors. If I have to replace the rotors nexttime around, I'll really have to work those pads over to get them tofit.
