REPLACEMENT CAR PARTS : Eric Swanson provide you with all the proof any honest person needs.he auto manufacturers have ALWAYS charged more for replacement parts than forthe same part included in a new car. Each year, as they build the latest model, they also stockpile replacement parts. They know from history that a certainfraction of cars each year will crunch and crash, thus they make lots of moneyselling the parts to fix the wrecks. For several years, they are the only available source of crash parts, like fenders, hoods and bumpers. They sellcars at near cost, especially at the end of the model year, so they can lock in another year's monopoly on replacement parts. The same is true for drive train parts and trim parts. They sell replacement parts for 10 years, after which, you are on your own. The high cost of replacement parts makes it tooexpensive to maintain older cars which don't have some overly interestingcharacteristics, which perpetuates the sales of new cars as the old onesare junked long before they are dead.
REPLACEMENT CAR PARTS : I learned this straight from the mouth of a Detroit economist.Outside suppliers do not make replacement parts for many of the engine and drive trains, unless there is a large volume expected. Each year, small changes makeit less likely that such aftermarket supply will appear. This is especially truefor low volume cars, like the Toyota Prius and the Honda Insite.I've been fighting the auto parts battle for more than 40 years. Recently, I purchased a low production Ford Taurus SHO. The engine is made by Yamaha and the price of replacement parts 3 or 4 times greater than that of a standardTaurus. Spark plugs are about $25 EACH. Ford plug wires are $80. The idlerpulleys are $90 each and there are 2. I don't even want to think about pistonsand camshafts... REPLACEMENT CAR PARTS : or if you're mechanically inclined, you can buy the parts for $30 and do ityourself! The task doesn't involve "winding" anything per se -- you buy anupgraded, pre-wound stator, bearings, and brushes, and you're set. Most ofthe time, the diodes have enough margin in them that they will accommodatethe new current levels, and unless your alternator is broken to begin withyou won't need these or the voltage regulator.Remanufacturing alternators is one of the best kept moneymaking secrets inthe replacement car parts industry. A cheep re-man alternator has about$15 worth of parts in it (brushes and bearings), though some manufacturersmay routinely change the diodes too I don't know. most of the value is inthe case, rotor, and stator, all of which you give away for a $10 corecharge. REPLACEMENT CAR PARTS : Funny how sometimes smallest things set one off... I just tried to switchmy original equipment (but cracked) brake fluid res. cap for a replacement Iobtained from a local Seattle-area import car parts store today ($2.50 +tax) and the darn thing has threads that don't match the original! (I havea '72 standard type I sedan). Now this inexpensive part will cost me more in the long run because I willhave to drive about 20 miles out of my way to try to exchange for one thatfits! The only thing I can imagine is that either I was given one for alater/earlier car or (more likely) this is a part made in a third worldcheap labor setting where quality control isn't that good.I wouldn't get so irritated, but this isn't the first time this hashapppened to me. My first bad experience was with a Brazilian-made (andsupposedly only available at the time) 12-volt generator pulley. It had thenotch for the woodruff key slightly off -- enough so that it wouldn't alignwith the notch on the generator shaft! Completely worthless part! REPLACEMENT CAR PARTS : As for the brake res. cap, I'll have to exchange it when I am in-town... butthis time I am bringing my replacement brake res. w/ me to test fit in thestore! (As a means of double-checking the new cap, I had test fit theoriginal cap onto the replacement fluid res. and it fit fine, thereplacement cap did not).** Related irritation: I should also mention that the place I obtained thebrake fluid res. (by ordering on-line) advertised the replacement res. assold w/ cap! When it arrived, it had no cap included! The print catalogshows them as sold individually! **Nate,The same identical thing just happened to me with the same part. I bought anew brake reservoir cap for my '73 Super and the darn thing cracked down theside when I was screwing it on. I understand the whole planned obsolescencedeal, but c'mon now... a couple of turns and crack!
