RENAULT CAR SPARES : OK, this is just a peeve.... but *why* do auto mfgrs. not put full sizedspares in cars? Just got back from the junkyard, after 3 flats in thelast year I thought I should get a real spare wheel for the GF'sSentra... the well is big enough in diameter to hold it but it's about1.5" too shallow! ARGH! if you put a real wheel and tire in there thestupid cover board thingy doesn't sit flat anymore. So if you'replanning to take a road trip through BFE you have to either take up someof your trunk space to hold a real spare, or else pray that you don'tget a flat and have to go 50 MPH for the next 100 miles until you get tocivilization. At least VW's have real spares (the old ones, anyway) Does the 3 lbs. that a real spare weighs over a donut really make thatmuch difference?
RENAULT CAR SPARES : Another peeve... whatever happened to mounting the spare upright in thetrunk, like old Volvos or American cars? Under a board which is coveredby carpet is not convenient, and it also all but insures that your sparewill be flat when you need it (like hers was) since there's no easy wayto check pressure without taking all your stuff out of the trunk andpulling the carpet.In part because modern tires are so much more reliable than years back. I'm waiting to see who will be the first tohave the nerve to sell a car with no spare.It's already being done... on cars that have "run flat" tires and tirepressure monitoring systems (to let you know when one is flat, sincethat corner won't drop)

(haven't had any flats on my cars, of course now that i'vesaid that...) I don't think General tires are necessarily the problem, although they certainly aren't state-of-the-art. Have you considered the driver? RENAULT CAR SPARES : IIRC, both the Countach and the Diablo have no spare, but do includethe Fix-a-Flat free.I just took the board out of my mustang, stored some stuff ina cardboard box in the center of the wheel. Of course it stillbumps up... but oh well. I feel better with a full-size spare.When I got my new wheels and tires, I left two of the old ones at my parent's house. 1) I didn't have space for them. 2) Ifigured my dad might need to use them on his mustang. Sure enough,he's used them 2 or three times already. Let's him keep driving the car and get the flat fixed whenever there is time, rather than droping everything to get it done ASAP.I just have one of those 12V air compressors that pluginto the lighter outlet. If I should ever find a flat sparewhen I need it, its no big deal.
RENAULT CAR SPARES : So if you get a flat while your car is stuffed full of cargo, then putthe temporary spare on, repacking your cargo may be difficult...It *shouldn't* be that bad: if the "flat" really is flat then it willsquash down quite nicely; if it is merely a bit soft and leaking thenyou can just prod the valve to flatten it properly.That said, I dislike spares (of any type) kept within the car butbelow the boot floor.In some ways, the nicest I've had was on the Renault 14, where itrested on a cradle above the engine, so it was a doddle to get at itwithout any effect whatsoever on loadspace. Of course, there was adownside to this: the engine was tilted back at some crazy angle tomake room for it, and it collected leaking oil rather readily.
