(LOL)3) It was one of two vehicles sold in the US during the 60s that hadindependent rear suspension *AND* sufficent horsepower to lay down a set ofblack marks. It had something theycalled a transaxle, very revolutionary for the time. Was it 4 cylinder? Ireally didn't recall that, but could have been. I remember my neighbor had oneand I remember the lack of the distinctive center hump in the floorboard forthe usual transmission and drive train. Was it also something Delorean workedon at Pontiac, along with the GTO? The Tempest evolved into the GTO in '64, Ithink.

The engine wasone side of a 326 V8. Rear transaxle was for better weight distribution. John DeLorean was Pontiac's head engineer in those days and this was one ofhis projects. By 1964 DeLorean and company had put a 389 into the Tempestwith conventional transmission placement and the GTO was born. PONTIAC CAR PARTS : Close, but NOT QUITE GOOD ENOUGH for the true anal retentives outhere.The 4-cylinder Tempest (and LeMans) was built from 1961-1963. Thetransmission (3 available: the 2-speed automatic you saw, plus 3- and4-speed manuals) was some kind of variation on a Corvair gearbox(flipped over, backwards, or something). The engine was the left bankof a Pontiac V8, but not the 326. It was half of a 389! Do the math:194½ cubic inches. These cars were not only quite roomy, but quiteSLOW! They also suffered from swing-axle overcentering, making themas deadly as an early Corvair in the twisties (Don't ask me how I knowthis.). Finally, in '63, Pontiac put a 326 into some of them andpromptly started paying out warranty claims for snapped driveshaftsand busted gearboxes.
PONTIAC CAR PARTS : Personally, I suspect it was just to see if they could get away withit. The aluminum block V-8 Olds F-85 and the V-6 Buick Skylark werein the same body and both could actually get out of their own way.Not the Tempest.There were a pile of them made, but they're not very desirable, orpleasant, cars to keep around. BTW, if you want to ID it, here's how:The '61 had a split grille with the sides forming points at thecenter, kind of like contemporary full-size Pontiacs.The '62 grille was NOT split, but had a low center section about 2feet wide. Both '61 and '62 models had deep body side sculpturingfront to rear, similar to older GM products.The '63 had a split grille again, but the center was a straight post.The body sides were mostly flat, like the '64 and later Tempest/GTO.'63 Tempests had two stacked round taillights while the '63 LeMans hadlow, square lights like the '64, and usually had bucket seats. A4-door would not likely have been a LeMans.
