PERFORMANCE CARS PARTS : Yep. Most retail for a hell of a lot less than $7 each. Mostmotorcycle shops retail most NGK plugs for around $2.49 each. It's a special size that's really used on almost nothing exceptsporting bikes. Fairly small plug, but it has to stand up to morephysical abuse than many plugs that fit older/lower-compressionmachines that don't rev as high. The -9 plugs are almostexclusively used on Honda bikes as well.If you're lucky, you might be able to find those plugs for as littleas $5.75 apiece. You will have to hunt a long time to find thatprice, I should think, though.Have you priced tune-up parts for cars lately? See what platinumHeck, skip the German part even. I paid more than enough for platinum for my Nissan. Parts certainly don't cost what they used to.
PERFORMANCE CARS PARTS : That would just suck. Having to buy ANOTHER $50 air filter. Wet dry shopvac, here I come....I don't know about you Adam, but I'm sure glad they're finally gettingaway from this. A spark plug wire set for my wife's Miata costs about$70 for FOUR wires, and they need to be replaced every 30k miles. Thankgoodness more and more new cars are coming with coil over plug ignition!Tim Morrow--MSF #21769CCS Expert #192000 Mid-Atlantic Middleweight Sportsman Champion2000 Mid-Atlantic Formula 40 Expert Champion (2000 race team) (2001 race team)On Mon, 27 Nov 2000 19:19:56 -0500, Tim & Kathy Morrow wrote:*grins* Yeah, but wait until one of THOSE fails... Tiny coils, exposed to a great deal of heat and vibration... Sure, they cutdown on weight and make a more reliable spark, but DAMN, are theyexpensive... And I doubt their service life will even come CLOSE tothat of standard coils. PERFORMANCE CARS PARTS : My friend's Nissan Maxima as over 120k miles on it using coil-on-plugignitors similar to motorcycle designs. It's proven technology and thecoils don't do as much work as a centralized model would due toefficiency. Interestingly enough the underhood temps of a car are farhigher than anything generated behind the radiator of a motorcycle.Mazda Miata...hello? That motorcycle parts were a ripoff came asa surprise to me a couple years back. I learned about foreigncar part ripoffs back in 1970, with my Colt and my Capri. I'vebeen spoiled since by the pig-iron-like prices I pay for minivan parts.Alas, I spose the cycle experience is supposed to be like drugs:dangerous, expensive and addictive. Here's a thought; if you don't want to pay them, DON'T BUY AMOTORCYCLE!Go to the NGK site and check this but I think the -9 at the endof their plug designation just means it's pre-gapped to 0.9 mm.So if someone offers the same plug without the -9 for a lowerprice it would work (after adjusting the gap). PERFORMANCE CARS PARTS : WARREN -- General Motors Corp. has pulled together all of itshigh-performance vehicle projects under one roof in a bid tostrengthen storied muscle car brands such as Chevrolet's SS andengineer a new performance lineup for Cadillac. The new GM Performance Division -- a team of about 200 engineers, designers and technicians headed by executive director Mark Reuss --will also develop and build all future GM concept cars and trucks forfuture auto shows. The division's goal is to create concept vehicles and performancevariants of existing cars and trucks that GM can easily and quicklyput on the market. "We ought to have this dialed in where we're having show cars thatwe can put into production at a much different level than we've beendoing," Reuss said. Once famous for its high-performance cars, GM over the years letbrands such as Chevy's SS (for Super Sport) fade as budgets werecrunched and the company moved almost entirely to front-wheel-drivecars. Meanwhile, competitors have grabbed market share in the performancearena with popular brands such as Ford Motor Co.'s SVT (for SpecialVehicle Team) and BMW AG's M series. "Other than some of the Camaros and Corvettes, we really haven'tdone a strong job in putting performance with those brands in recenthistory, although we did a great job of it in the 1960s," said Reuss,a 38-year-old engineer and son of former GM President Lloyd Reuss. Under a continuing reorganization of GM's design and developmentgroup by Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz, Reuss is emerging as one of GM's topvehicle development executives. A year ago, Reuss was the head of development for the Pontiac Aztekand Buick Rendezvous. Today, Reuss oversees more than 1,000 people atGM's Technical Center in Warren charged with doing the earlyengineering and development work for all future GM vehicles. But the most visible part of Reuss' job will be the PerformanceDivision. For the division, Reuss has surrounded himself with fellowcar enthusiasts including chief designer Kip Wasenko, who designed theCadillac Evoq concept roadster; Jon Moss, the man behind the 1994Chevy Impala SS; and John Heinricy, a GM engineer and race car driver. Earlier, people like Moss were spread across the giant company, trying to develop performance cars with limited resources and littlecontact with the other parts of GM. Reuss believes the new setup will help GM bring out revved-upversions of existing vehicles faster and cheaper. One of thedivision's first projects is developing a performance lineup forCadillac, including a turbo-charged version of the new Cadillac CTS. "The way we were set up, there was no way we could haveaccomplished that," Reuss said. "It was a bunch of different groupsdoing different things with different budgets and differentpriorities." PERFORMANCE CARS PARTS : Doh! I meant Falcon. Sheesh. I gotta read what I write sometimes. I wasburied in the BTTC sites though, so forgive me :P.Please, please, please allow Mr. Lutz to make final exterior designdecisions. I beg you.I can just picture a *shudder* Holden Manaro-based GTO with plastic claddingup to the door handles but it *does* have a pup tent in the trunk. Two of the "bright lights" from GM's days of HIGH performance were LloydReuss and Herb Fischel; two of the nicest guys you would ever know.If Mark's anything like his dad he's very amenable tocustomer/enthusiast input, so "get those cards and letters going" totell him what you _want_ in the way of GM Performance. (Like aresurrection of the RWD Impala SS with an LS6 engine, for example ).
