I think there's more than two hands andI think there might be more body parts than that,'' a source said.Four men inside the Jeep Cherokee that Somerset Officer Todd Costapulled over about 12:30 p.m. as it was traveling southbound on Route 138have been charged as accessories after the fact of murder, according toAssistant Bristol County District Attorney Gerald FitzGerald.They include the Jeep's driver, Osiris Parra, 18, Frank Sanchez-Collins,19, and Marcos Quinones, 19, all of Providence, R.I., and StevenQuinlan, 21, whose address was not immediately known.
PARTS OF CAR : Quinlan, the source said, was already being sought on a warrant forfailing to appear in district court.The source said at least two hands were found in a plastic bag on thepassenger-side floor of the Jeep.Investigators were trying to get a search warrant to comb the rest ofthe vehicle.Costa could not be reached for comment and Somerset police referredquestions about the case to a statement issued by FitzGerald's office.The source said Rhode Island authorities have been alerted and ``policethere are looking for one or more bodies in Providence.''Detective Mark Cabral of the Providence Police Department declined tosay last night if the body parts might be connected to any recentunsolved murders in Rhode Island or if authorities there are familiarwith the young men arrested.``There's an investigation going on. (AP) Four men arrested in a Massachusetts traffic stopwere carrying a bag with the severed hands of two Providence, R.I., murdervictims, a prosecutor said Monday.Two of the suspects killed the men and the two others were helping themfind a place to dispose of the body parts, prosecutor Bill Flynn said atthe defendants' arraignment.No motive was revealed in court, but Flynn said the two suspectsresponsible for the murders knew the victims.Maj. Martin Hames, a Providence police spokesman, would not comment.The bodies were found Sunday night in a Providence apartment. Along withboth men's hands, one man's ear was cut off.The four suspects, all from Providence, pleaded innocent in District Courtto accessory to murder charges and were ordered held without bail.
PARTS OF CAR : Frank Sanchez-Collins, 19, and Steven Quinlan, 21, boasted to the twoothers that they had stabbed the victims and cut off their hands, Flynnsaid. Osiris Parra, 18, drove his mother's car and Marcos Quinones, 19,rode along to help throw out the remains.The men were driving on Interstate 195, hoping to throw the victims' handsover the Braga Bridge, when they decided there was too much traffic andheaded toward Somerset, according to court records.Somerset Patrolman Todd Costa stopped them when he saw beaded necklaces andair fresheners hanging from the rear-view mirror that impeded the driver'sview.When Costa searched the car, he found a shirt, wet with blood, on the floornear the front passenger seat. A plastic bag smeared with blood was wrappedinside the shirt.
PARTS OF CAR : ''I ripped open the bag and observed a rock and the fingers of at least onehuman hand,'' Costa wrote in his report.Defense lawyers argued the stop was illegal and they planned to ask a judgeto throw out evidence seized from the car. The only reason the Jeep waspulled over because three of the four suspects were black, defenseattorneys said.Victims in mutilation double murder in their '20sBy Associated Press, 03/27/01PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The severed hands found in a plastic bag during aMassachusetts traffic stop belonged to men ages 20 and 22 whose bodies werefound in a city apartment, investigators said today.The state medical examiner identified the 22-year-old as Michael R. Batista ofProvidence. The name of the 20-year-old will not be released until hisout-of-state relatives are notified.
