In 1953 they went to the rubber bushings which was easier to manufacture and did not need lubrication.The steel bushing system of the 51-52 cars however lasted much longer if they were propperly lubricated,On the 1963-64 R series cars and taxicabs Studebaker again used these steel bushings on the upper "A" frame.Fred Gooch of Tucson AZ. had some Delrin bushings machined to replace the rubber ones. These work out verywell. They have a steel sleeve and a grease fitting.When you do a frame of on any 1953 up Studebaker you often see cracks in the frame tower where the upper control arm bolts to the frame.I have seen several carswhere the frame broke out and the upper control arm wasnot fastened to anything.These cracks are caused by the twisting action of the "A"frame. The rubber in the bushings get hard and the ridegets bumpy.When you replace these bushing or better yet install the"A" frames from a 1951 or 1952 Stude you can not believehow nice the car rides again.I have never heard of a problem with the Delrin bushings.The are around $110.00 for a set while newly manufacturedrubber bushings are $80.00 a set.R.Kapteyn
