PARTS CARS : Unfortunately, I have moved around a lot recently and the GREAT hobby shop I usedto patronize and order stuff thru is now about 6 hours drive away, so I feel stuckwith only my Walthers catalog as a companion.Perhaps the reason that they are in so much demand is because they areout of production. You used to be able to find all the Athearn PA's youwanted. Then around 1988 Athearn stopped making them. Eventually thehobby store stock was depleted and then they were in high demand(Trainmasters too at that time). Now that they are back in productionthey are easy to find again.I think many people put off buying somethings when they are readilyavailable. When they hear it's been discontinued, all of a sudden theywake up and say, I just gotta get it now or it's never again. Supply isshort of demand, the stores are depleted of that item, and everybodygoes nuts searching out of the way hobby stores, swap meets, etc lookingfor said item. If and when it finally goes back into production, thosewho still gotta have it get theirs, the shelves are stocked again, andmany people ignore it until the next time its discontinued again. I'veseen this at least twice with the never to be produced again, rubberband drive Athearn RDC's.

PARTS CARS : Regarding the Athearn 86' Auto Parts boxcars, remember what happened to the Trainmaster, RDC, and (now) the DD40? They all disappeared from the Walthers catalog. This just means that Walthers could not get them. Athearn wasn't producing them at the time. It seems that Athearn works on a cyclical schedule, and gets around to re-running everything... eventually. Seems awfully stupid, though... the most "in-demand" items are ones that are out of production!
