OEM CAR PARTS : The first magnetic suppression wire I remember was Sorenson Mono-Mag inthe early 70s. It had the same monel conductor wrapped spirally arounda center core. It speced at 100 ohms/ft so the theory was that ittransfered spark energy like a copper wire but did not affect radioreception. Unless the conductor is physically cut, it will have muchbetter long-term durability than any carbon-cored wire. I put a set on my dad's pickup because I was tired of his mechanicsalways finding a bad plug wire. That set stopped that for a few yearsuntil he reverted back to his old mechanic whose fix for everything wasa new plug wire. As for radio noise (AM), I could hear a little withthe hood down on a weak station, but nothing serious.
OEM CAR PARTS : I understand that a federal spec went into effect in the early 60s thatall vehicles had to be produced with resistance wires so that lawenforcement communications (FM) would not be adversely affected by theRF noise from automtoive ignition systems. At that time, resistor sparkplugs were a rarity for specific applications.When I later bought plug wires, I looked for more Sorensons, but theywere not available. I did later find the BorgWarner KoolWires and haveused them. They are magnetic suppression also with similarconstruction. At one time, their Chrysler sets (for the A. B, RBengines and maybe the Slant 6s) came in oem-style colors with good bootsizes and configurations. Since I found that PepBoys carries them, Ihave put them on everything I have needed them for with no problems. Ihave one set with about 450,000 miles on it. OEM CAR PARTS : The nomenclature on the products can be some variation of "Kool Wire" todesignate the magnetic suppression wires. I highly recommend them orsome from a similar high-quality manufacturer. You will probably nothave to worry about the famous "lifetime warranty" with them.When I look for car parts, I use the oem production part as thebenchmark. While cost is a factor, it is not the overriding factor asthe time to later change the cheaper part twice instead of once (timeand money! even if I do the labor) is not worth the short-term savings.In times past when I could not find a MoPar part, I'd look at AC-Delcoand Motorcraft as they are also oem-spec parts. Or I'd seek out asuitable high-performance alternative if I wanted to.I have nothing against AutoZone, just the somewhat lower quality "valuepriced" parts they tend to sell. When they came to town, every one ofthe independent auto parts stores thought it "was the end", but they areall still in business three years later. They get the second purchaseafter the AutoZone parts do not hold up. And I see that also at thedealership parts dept level--belts that stretch after running a fewhundred miles, etc. OEM CAR PARTS : Some of you may have used their products and had good results to datewith them. I am glad for you. But I feel safe in saying that most ofwhat they sell under their house brands is a notch or two below whatNAPA sells and not up to oem specs in many cases. But they may workfine for what you want.Considering the importance of plug wires to the emissionscharacteristics of the modern engines, I don't feel that is a place toscrimp on quality irregardless of whether you buy Chrysler plug wires orquality wires from another manufacturer.The lifetime warranties can be a moot point because of various factors.Almost all new parts now have some sort of warranty coverage from themanufaturer or seller. I also tend to concur that you are looking for a reason to buy the lessexpensive wires instead of buying the ones from Chrysler at a higherprice. If I had to choose between either the oem Chrysler wires or theAutoZone wires, there is not question that I would get the Chryslerwires because they would be made to the specs of the manufacturer andnot the revised specs of an auto supply chain. Specs with regard tofit, durability, performance, and cosmetics. OEM CAR PARTS : I also use similar criteria (as related above) with other car parts,including brake friction parts, lubricants, etc. The long term cost intime and money is usually less if you buy quality maint items the firsttime instead of trying to save a few dollars in the short term. Just myexperiences.When I see a car with less expensive auto supply parts under the hood, Iget the impression that they probably bought the cheapest things theycould buy for other things in caring for the vehicle. Perhaps they werejust trying to patch it together until they could get rid of it, only tohave to repatch it again because they did not buy the good stuff tostart with. Just my impression of that situation.Sorry for the length, but hope this might further explain some of theorientations of Daniel and others. These are my experiences from 23+years at the dealership parts level and another 15 yrs past that ofbeing around repair shops and service stations where cars which hadbroken were being repaired and doing many of my own repairs/maint.
