NISSAN CAR PARTS : TOKYO OCT 20 JPS -- Following the Nissan's "Revival Plan" announcement,the All-Japan Metal and Information Machinery Workers' Union (JMIU) NissanBranch members on October 19 had a morning rally in front of the NissanMurayama Plant in Musashi-murayama City in Tokyo, one of the plants to beclosed, calling for defending their jobs and workplaces. The members appealed, "We are not car parts but humans. The biggestcause was Nissan's mismanagement, so we cannot allow such 'Revival Plan'having a grave influence on the workers' lives and local economy." The JMIU and its Nissan Branch published a statement saying that the"Revival Plan" is at the cost of the workers and the parts manufacturersandwill adversely affect the local economy and local government. Pointing out that the Plan only aims for increasing profits but does notrefer at all to management responsibility and the company's socialresponsibility, the statement demands the following three points: (1) nocut in the number of employees; (2) provide a workplace where the workerscan live with their family without any anxiety; and (3) use the workers'skill, ability and experience which they have cultivated.
NISSAN CAR PARTS : In Kyoto Prefecture, Yoshiyuki Hamada JCP candidate for the House ofRepresentatives called for politics to regulate the large companies'outrageous actions in front of the Nissan Kyoto Plant in Uji City which isalso targeted to be closed. Hamada criticized that the Liberal Democratic Party- the Liberal Party-the Komei Party coalition government is pushing forward the companyrestructuring, and said that it is important for the recovery of Japan'seconomy to reduce working hours and consumption tax rate at the same timetoprotect the workers' lives and local economy. The National Federation of Merchants and Industrialists Organizations(Zenshoren) made representations to the Prime Minister's Office on October19 to call on the government to move for taking countermeasures to theNissan's "Revival Plan" sacrificing small- and medium-sized companies,workers and local economies.

NISSAN CAR PARTS : The company says there is not any other option than this for theirsurvival, but as of March 1999 it has 1.3 trillion yen as an internalreserve. Subcontractors in the past have had to pay a lot to support Nissan'sproduction; unit prices of their products have been pushed down. Citizensofthe cities where the plants are situated also have been forced to pay morebecause the company received tax breaks just for operating in those cities. Nissan's trade union, the Nissan Motor branch of the All Japan Metal andInformation Machinery Workers' Union (JMIU), is determined to fight againstthe plan. "We have no choice but to reject the plan by which the managementshifts the burden unilaterally onto the workers without establishing itsresponsibility." The serious thing is that the government has lost no time in expressingsupport for Nissan's major restructuring plan by invoking the industrialrevitalization law which helps large corporations carry out restructuringthrough tax breaks for such practices and by using financial measuresaddressed to subcontractors.
