NEW CAR PARTS : --I made a spelling error? Nonsense- my modem is "error correcting".There was a movement by American car companies a few years ago to make aftermarket parts illegal for a period of 10 years - but that monopolizing tactic was soundly defeated. And you're right: there is no predetermined time a car manufacturer must make parts available. Ford is notorious for dropping a part from its catalog - particularly trim pieces - when it is no longer used on a current production model - though the car itself may still be in production. GM, on the other hand, has been great about keeping a well supplied back stock of parts for "collector cars" such as corvettes, etc. Most "New" car parts are made by suppliers rather than the auto companies themselves then assembled into the car you find in your driveway. As demand for these parts lessen, manufactures shift production to other items and car companies and auto parts stores keep smaller stocks. If you go into your local auto parts store and buy Anchor, Moog, Neihoff, Perfect Circle, Wix, or etc, more than likely, this was the same part manufactured by the same company that GM, Ford, or Chrysler used - for half the price!

NEW CAR PARTS : What's the difference between a current production model and a car currently in production?See ye here, (Charles A. Lieberman) crafted the followingwords:The Ford Mustang is a car that's "currently in production". You can buy a 1999Ford Mustang, but the current production model isn't the same model as a 1964Mustang. Thus you will find it easy to get a replacement rear-view mirror foryou 1998 or 1997 Ford Mustang (current production model) but hard to get on forthe older model. All email sent to the address used for this post is deleted unread (although headers may be used in my spam filters). To reach my real email box, send to personal@ at the above domain.last I herd.....Mfgs. hat to supply parts for 10 yrs. from date ofmanufacture.Automobile manufactures are under no legal obligation to supply parts forthe cars that they manufacture. It doesn't matter if the car was built lastyear or 10 years ago. It is a business decision, an economic decision, howlong to keep building parts for older cars. This differs from civilaviation companies, which are required to build parts for aircraft built inthe last 20 (??) years.

NEW CAR PARTS : Moreover, a large, and growing, percentage of the parts in a car are notmade by the car's manufacturer at all. This is one of the biggest complaintsof the UAW. Car companies want to become primarily designers and assemblersof automobiles, building them from components that are made by thirdcompanies. (Similar to the way PCs are made today -- your new Dell computerhas very little that actually manufactured by Dell from the raw materials.)The third-party manufacturer can continue to build the part for as long ashe wants to. And for many "classic" cars like Mustangs and Corvettes, "new"parts are still being made today by independent companies for 1970s modelsbecause there is still a demand.Counter-example. 1980 Dodge Colt. Fender-bender minor accident in1986. Body shop is unable to obtain the nifty stripes pattern thatwent out of stock after the insurance company's catalog was printed.

NEW CAR PARTS : I've just been speaking to my mechanic whilst leaning on a late V6Telstar. I looked under the bonnet to see a head removed and asked himwhat the problem was - turns out the car was in a front on accident, and the cooling system wasn't fixed correctly and the owner cooked it.The mechanic played the guessing game with me on the cost of a newmotor from Ford - twenty two thousand five hundred dollars andI thought $4,500 for a 3.9 Falcon 6 from Ford was robbery he is nowpricing parts, valve lash adjusters - $180 * 24, thats $4,320 forvalve lash adjusters!!!!!, OEM Ford for a 3.9 Falcon - $22.50 each.It looks like its going to cost around $8,500 for the rebuildThese motors may be nice & reliable but when they are stuffed its noteconomically viable the rebuild them, so are we heading for thedisposable car, at least in this respect cars have finally caught upwith computers - if it fails throw it away and get another ;-)

NEW CAR PARTS : In article , (Kieron Murphy) writes:[cooked telstar story deleted]Oh boy. Strike the 626/Telstar from my shopping list (not that itwas on there in the first place). What I find bizarre about this is that the prices for rebuild bitsfor Alfas have been dropping for the past 5 years or so. What exoticmaterials are the Japanese using for their valve lash adjustersthat make them so expensive? Does that engine have variablevalve timing? I would imagine that any Honda VTEC motor wouldsuffer from a similar problem wouldn't it?I have a feeling that all of those niche market cars from Honda,Mazda and Nissan with low volume V6 motors will be virtuallyworthless when it comes to trade in time, mostly because 2ndhand buyers will be well aware of the possible cost ofa catastrophic engine or gearbox failure. I guess you couldalways rely on the supply of 2nd hand motors from the Japaneseimporters...but they will be priced accordingly given theprice of repair parts. I think that's a business I shouldinvestigate :-)
