NAPA CAR PARTS : I went to the NAPA auto parts on Colfax & Chambers near here in Aurora, Colorado today, to get some bolts to put my license plates on the used car we just bought. There were 4 small lines at the counters. The one nearest the door had 2 guys in it, so I took the next one that only had one in front of me. When the guy in front of me walked away, so had the one in front of the guy in the line next to me, but his clerk hadn’t returned yet, so he just walks over in front of me & the guy who was supposed to start helping me asks him what he wants! I said; “Wait a minute, I was standing in line here!” The guy at the counter, as if he’s been asleep or something, says; “ I don’t know who was next” and the one who just walked up says he was and the clerk just starts helping him! It was a classic case of the invisible woman! So I said; “This sucks!” and stormed out as they both looked stupid and shrugged! I know I’m 48 & all but this was a case of being ridiculously invisible!
NAPA CAR PARTS : So I went to the Kmart across the street and they didn’t have the bolts or much of anything else I needed. By that time I’d calmed down again, so I thought; I’ll try it again. I went back over to the NAPA store. This time there’s one guy in front of me at the counter and I was standing about 6 inches behind him. There’s a big fat slob guy standing leaning against a parts display about 7 feet to my 4 O’clock behind me. The guy gets done with the one in front of me and as he’s vacating the space in front of me, the fat one way behind me sashays his ass right up there and the guy at the counter starts helping him! I couldn’t believe it!! Twice in one hour! I said; I was waiting in line here! The bearded slob says; no, I was in line! I said; no you weren’t, you were all the way back there! The guy behind the counter said; well he was just waiting back there!
NAPA CAR PARTS : So I’m ready to hit the roof at that point but am not even sure anyone would notice, unless I started throwing merchandise at them! Instead I asked to talk to the manager. After asking twice, and about 5 minutes later, the manager comes out. He at least tries to help me but won’t even acknowledge my complaint about my previous invisibility. So he gets a package of bolts & takes them out to my car & tries one. It doesn’t fit the threads. I said they must be metric being it’s a Toyota. Of course I’m a woman, so I can’t know what I’m talking about! He goes & gets a ratchet driver and proceeds to rip the head off a bolt with it torqued too hard into the hole! Then he has to have me pull up to the back door so he can take another half hour drilling the bolt out of my car’s threaded insert! Then he says to another guy that he should go get him some of those self tapping screws. I said; no way, you’re not ruining the threads by tapping them out! He again looks shocked that I’m not a complete idiot and could possibly know anything about it. I told him; I’ll call Toyota’s parts dept. tomorrow & find out what size metric thread I’m dealing with, then I’ll find it somewhere else!
NAPA CAR PARTS : I’d suggest staying away from NAPA ! I don’t get the impression they exactly like or respect women!Please email me back, as I may not get back here soon enough. I've been treated rudelyin a car parts store too.Moreover, I'm not even convinced that you were treated unreasonably.On both occasions when you say a man was waited on before you,the man was also in the store and waiting before you were. Theconcept of being "next in line" is sometimes open to interpretation.Just because there were two clerks does not necessarily mean that there were two lines, and placing yourself in front of one clerkdoes not obligate him to take you next. He may have been operatingon the single-queue premise. The custom in car parts stores might be different from the custom in the stores where you usually shop. I'm not saying that any of these things are true, but they might be.I don't think that your story "proves" gender discrimination, orany other kind of discrimination. I'm sorry that you personallyhad a bad experience, but I don't accept it as evidence of patriarchal oppression of women.
