MUSTANG CAR PARTS : 180 out speaks wisdom he does.I tried to follow his plan last year when I wanted a Sunbeam Tiger.I looked and looked for the clean cherry car that did NOT need restorationbut was not a top dollar just finished show car. I searched for 5 monthsbefore I found a "good one" 500 miles away.I have driven the car more than 5k miles since purchasing it in Oct 2001, Ihave enjoyed every top down second of it. I have also enjoyed rebuildingboth clutch and brake master cylinders, rebuilding the power brake booster,repairing the speedometer and tachometer, replacing the radiator andrebuilding the heads after deducing a cracked head was the source of thewater loss and overheating problems. I have also enjoyed having the cartowed home twice, once for a broken throttle cable and once because theclutch slave cylinder bracket bent and caused the clutch to stickdisengaged. I have spent over 1500 bucks in parts and labor on a car thatwas restored 5 years ago.The car is rust free and the body looks great, so no work is needed there.I really was trying to find a car that would not require a lot of time torestore and I succeeded sorta. It has required a lot more time in thegarage than I was hoping for but luckily not more time than I could spare(Boys 5 and 7 have a way of demanding time that is wonderful andunbelievable at the same time)
MUSTANG CAR PARTS : I guess I am trying to say that if you want to have any hope of driving yourcar in any forseeable future you need to spend 90% of your budget up fronton the best car you can find. Then keep the balance to keep it on the road.You'll need it. It is also much easier to convince the chief financialofficer to increase the budget if you can take her for a drive in the stangon a nice day instead storing seats and car parts in her guest bedroom.180 -I checked out that site and found some good ideas there. Thanks. I'mactually eyeing a couple '70 Chevelles, too. That's a car I neverconsidered before, but it's larger than many of the cars I was looking atbefore and I'm a tall guy. For a daily driver, I may enjoy the extra roomthat much more. Still, I'll keep looking for a good deal and hope one comesmy way.
MUSTANG CAR PARTS : Ok first some back ground:I have an 85 ltd wagon and I am having a slight problem with a few autopartssuppliers regarding parts that will or will not fit on my car. The latestdisagreement is over brake components and suspension parts.Here is the questions:Will the brake pads, shoe's, rotor's and drum's off of a 84-86 mustang fitand work on the car?? parts place says No because their pc lists them asdifferent P/N's and isn't capable of doing cross references.2nd, will the front shock's and spring's from a similar aged mustang fit onmy wagon? . Parts place is using same excuse as for thebrakes.---Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.Checked by AVG anti-virus system ().Version: 6.0.404 / Virus Database: 228 - Release Date: 10/15/2002Front pads, rotors, and calipers should be the same. On the rear, your carshould have 10" shoes and drums rather than the 9" that most Fox Mustangshave ... (I used to have an 85 Marquis Fox wagon, and before that a 85Marquis LTS sedan 5.0 HO CFI).
MUSTANG CAR PARTS : Front springs and struts will bolt in, the ride height and spring rate maybe slightly different depending on what springs you get. Parts manuals do NOT list parts that will kinda sortafit but will be different from the originals. There are no excuses beingoffered - just a simple fact. If it is parts for the LTD wagon you seek, Isuggest you spec parts for the LTD wagon. Need tighter springs? Get tightersprings for the LTD - buying tighter springs for a car with different weightand/or loading characteristics is going to be a "this part is used andnon-returnable" gamble.
MUSTANG CAR PARTS : I can certainly imagine the mirth behind the parts counter once yourtaillights cleared the parking lot......Actually their parts listings were listed as "fox body sedan-ltd", "fox bodywagon-ltd","fox body mustang" and "fox body-gt" along with fox bodygrenada,fairmont etc., but yes I do believe that they were listed asspecific p/n's. One would guess that front rotors that are listed as thesame dia. and thickness and same lug spacing would fit several cars that hadthe same spec's listed for the exact same item wouldnt one?I suspect it was largely due to the fact that I was doing the cash and carrything.Mid size LTD/ Marquis ( Fox chassis) wagons have larger rear drums than thesedans and are 10" (whereas Mustangs use puny 9" drums). These drums arealso used on LTD LX ( and Marquis LTS in Canada) This may be where theproblem is as far as shoes. The front discs are the same as Mustang/CapriWITH 10" rotors. Mustangs also have 9" on the 4 banger early cars and 11" onthe '87 up 5 litres.
