The parts for each repair always cost about $20.00.The parts were made out of complely different materials with completelydifferent fabrication techniques and had completely different functions, yetthey all cost about the same.My theory is the labor cost of packaging, shipping and handling is the decidingfactor.Kind of like healthy food -- cabbage, potatoes, beans, corn or wheat flour --,always costs about 19 cents/ lb. MOTOR CAR PARTS : Instead of buying a door latch, you buy an assembly that includes thelatch, the handles, the link rods for the exterior and interiorhandles, the manual locking rod, assorted clips and widgets, and theelectric lock motor. I'm furious that the assembly _didn't_ includethe very special 1/4" pop rivet needed to hold the lock motor to thedoor, to replace the one you had to drill out to remove the old lockmotor. The dealer doesn't have, and _can't_get_, the correct rivet.Car manufacturers have changed the way they 'modularize' the cars,for service purposes at least. I assume that the intent is to makethe 'unit', whatever it is, expensive enough that the dealer can makea gross profit larger than what it costs him to have the parts personprocess the order and carry the part to you.

MOTOR CAR PARTS : The car was a Volvo 264 with a PRV design (Peugot-Renault-Volvo motor design) engine. The car has timing chains and in order for a waterpump to be replace the Intake Manifold has to come off the heads.They broke studs removing the intake manifold assembly and thenmelted the block surrounding the stud that had broken off in the block.When they realized the block melted around the stud they were tryingto remove they felt the repair was not possible. They told the owner,Bea...a woman, her car was not repairable. She then faced the"repair" bill of $800 and a car that was destined for the junk yard.She found out it was basically a give the car to the junk yard afterthe tow bill she called a friend in NE Ohio who runs a repair shopand buys parts cars occassionally. He gave her $100 after paying thetow bill. The car sat for 6 months, then his son's accident got themdigging into this car that had been very well cared for...Rust wasn'tan issue and it was low miles. Some time analyzing the situation andthey decided the repair just might work. About 8 hours later througheasy-out(s), drills, and some other mechanic tricks on removingbroken studs they had repaired the 4 broken intake to headbolts and the broken stud in the face of the motor.The car was used for 18 months or so before an accident took itoff the road permanently.So, yes...JB weld is very durable and long lasting.
