MODIFIED CAR PARTS : New faces and old friends sat in Victory Lane at the IndianapolisSpeedrome after a busy four-day weekend.The racing kicked off on Thursday with the NAMARS Midget RegionalSeries where teen-ager Teddy Beach of Donnelsville, Ohio topped a20-car feature that included Mel Kenyon, Rick Treadway, Keith Butlerand other veterans of open wheel racing. Third generation racer ShaneHollingsworth topped the Kenyon Midget main for the points lead in thatseries.The Baby Grand Stock Cars paid a visit on Friday with Indy's Danny Trenttaking the 25-Lap main over series ace Kent Baledge and former winner'sJonathan Byrd II and Don Napier. Cumberland's Dave Cumbee claimed hiscareer first win in the Carmel Sod Modifieds and tightened the pointsbattle between Jim Begley and Billy Boyer. Doug Greig had to borrowa car from Centerville, Ohio's Chad Smith and wrenched the pair to aone-two finish in the Race City Auto Sales Legend Car Series. The winstretched Greig's points lead in the series and was Smith's best finishof the year. James Robertson topped the Bandoleros and it was ScottSettles repeating in the Yardarm Bomber Figure-8's. Scott Tabor kickedoff three days of racing opportunities for the Sunshine Cafe Roadrunnerswith his first ever feature win.
MODIFIED CAR PARTS : Saturday was full of surprises in all divisions beginning withqualifying as Rodney Sizemore was the only Late Model to get under14 seconds. A hot, slick track stymied many during the early eveningpreliminaries including points leader Bruce Tunny who had just madethe oval feature through the second heat. Wanamaker's Danny Turnerclaimed the oval portion of the Bryant's 76 Late Model program overMooresville's Donnie Garrigus Jr. R.J. Norton, Jr. grabbed the 50-LapFigure-8 part of the show after traffic problems took out Bill TunnyJr. and points leader Bruce Tunny. It was Norton's first "8" win ofthe season and team owner Jim Olmsted's first career "8". Tim Minkhas learned quickly in his first year in the Chuck's Race Car PartsStock division and charged to a strong win over Larry Hahn. Dale Royscelebrated his first win in the Roadrunners with an "A" main victory andDavid Lee Byrd grabbed one of the back-up "B" features. Ronnie Hale wasjust registering his car as qualifications were wrapping up and went onto win the other "B" feature in his first night of racing.

Memphis, Indiana's Dale Shelton took the 76-Lap feature overIndy's Rodney Sizemore, Anderson's Doug & Mike Riddle, Louisville'sArtie B. Ware, Vasser, Michigan's Eric Gilbert and others from Indy andthe "Kentuckiana" area.The Roadrunners enjoy their own series with Brian Canter and ShaneBrothers claiming wins over points leader Doug Watt. The roughest racingof the weekend was in the second event for the Chuck's Race Car PartsPowder Puff Challenge. Twenty women racers borrowed rides for the 15-Lapevent and shocked everyone by actually RACING. When the checkered flagfell after 10 laps it was Melinda Luttrell in front and taking over thepoints lead in the series. Separate incidents sent two women to WishardHospital for check-ups but all were home by morning.
MODIFIED CAR PARTS : Bruce Tunny proved why he is THE MAN at the Indianapolis SpeedromeSaturday night by winning the 100-Lap Pepsi Challenge Figure-8 for theSpeedrome's Bryant 76 Racing Fuels Late Models. Jack Dossey, Jr. returnedfrom the injured reserve list to run a strong second challenging Tunny inthe closing laps. Rodney Sizemore pulled even with Tunny with 20 Laps to go,briefly taking the lead, only to have mechanical failures drop him out ofthe race with 5 laps remaining. Earlier in the evening Curtis McMurtrey snagged the 25-Lap Late ModelOval main for his first feature win of the season. It took an extra week to run after rain came on the first try at the5th Annual Kenny's Auto Sales 50 for the Chuck's Race Car Parts Stocks butthe wait was well worth it as 36 cars scrapped for 50 laps. Corey Turnercame home the winner over a frustrated former champ Jimmy Kirby,smooth-driving sophomore Charlie Hargraves and points leader Speedy Teepe. Abig pile-up heading for the white flag set up a two-lap shoot-out at the endafter sending front-runners Gregory Jines and Larry Hahn to the pits withmajor damage. The win set off a huge celebration in Victory Lane with eventsponsor Kenny Sizemore announcing plans to expand the race in 2002.
