MINI CAR PARTS : Very interesting idea...personally, I'd like an RC airboat to go play in teh snow. had anon-rc equipped one back int ehte late 60s ran on a Cox 049 engine.went like all hell on snow!On Sat, 2 Nov 2002 14:03:49 -0500, "rkremser" wrote:The "art" is not lost, in case anybody hasn't noticed that Cox, Hobbico(and other companies, I think) sell ARFs like that now. Plus the occasionaltwin-engine throttle-only planes, but I haven't had much luck with those.I'd love to put a real R/C unit in a Cox Airlifter, but I don't knowwhere I'd get a suitable speed control. If you want to do something like that then check this page out. I have beendoing some of the same research. This is very interesting. Would it be possible to use the bitracerelectronics to build a watercraft? I was thinking of doing a simpleship for my fish tank. The problem would be waterproofing theelectromagnet while still retaining mobility.
MINI CAR PARTS : I was browsing the interenet the other day and came accross a really needidea. It appears to be a indoor plane built from one of the new charg-gcars (aka ... mini rc, zip zaps, ect). These cars are simple 2 channel forsteering and throttle, digital so either on or off. The rudder controlldesign would be straight forwared using the electro magnets that are used inthe car for stearing. What I'm wondering about is the elevators. Can youeasily control the height of the plane with engine speed or would I have tomake the plane motor run constantly and some how develop a different methodto control the ailerons. Thanks for any help. Here is the web site where Ioriginally got the idea.I saw these cars at an Indoor flying session just this morning. Thereis very little torque available from the motor, what ever plane youmake should be able to fly without elevator. Maybe I should say that Idon't think the plane would be cabable of much vertical maneuvering? MINI CAR PARTS : I've got both a ZipZap and a Microsizer (the latter looks almost identical to the car pictured at the link below) I'm surprised that the electromagnets can hold the rudder over. I'm guessing that he's running it at a higher voltage than the car, because there isn't enough torque with the magnets while in the car to turn the wheels unless the car is moving. But obviously it can be made to work, so on to the next issue.Scratch the ailerons/elevator. Model it after a free flight planewith rudder only, and set it up so that when the motor's runningit climbs and otherwise glides. That's the way it is with this guy's plane and it works well. Some of the Bit Char-Gs evenhave a "turbo" option which gives them two forward speeds. I've also heard that the controller can be modified on a normalforward/reverse setup to give you off, forward slow, forward fastwhich would be optimal here. MINI CAR PARTS : And a link that page points toHis construction method looks emensely draggy. He mentions in oneof the videos how little energy retention it has. No surprise. There are lots of choices for motors and gear ratios with these cars.It looks like he made one version with a direct drive and small propand a second version that uses a bigger gear and a big high pitch prop from a rubber band powered plane. I'd just cut the back of the car off and leave the motor and axle all in place, and attach the prop to the wheel. There are different motors rated by their speed.. a 1.0 spins at 10,0002.0 20,000 rpms.. etc and the Zip-Zaps max out at about 2.5, while the Bit CharGs and Microsizers start there and get faster.. running up to like3.8. Anything above 3.0 in the car makes them *seriously* fastfor only being 50mm long and weighing 1oz. The high speed motors coupled with certain gear sets are very torquey, but you pay for it in reduced battery life. For this little plane, you can no doubt use a bigger battery so that becomes less of a problem (the car's battery is a 110mAhNiMH pack which they manage to charge in less than a minute. Talk about abuse of NiMH). Stay away from the ZipZap controllers btw.. they limit current so acceleration and maxtorque are reduced. Their gearsets are interchangible with the others though, and can be had for cheap at RadioShack, so a Microsizer car for $30 and a ZZ gearset for $7 would probably get you in the air.
