MG CAR PARTS : Parts are readily available ('tho not necessarily at your localparts store) and lots of people know how to work on MGs. IMHO the MGB'sworst problem is rust. It was one of the first unit-body cars and thevarious nooks and crannies seem designed to hold moisture-laden dirtpacked against the insides of the sheet metal. The sill plates areespecially vulnerable and are critical to the car's structure; theycan be replaced, but at a price. Rust has been such a problem that,even tho MG's are no longer made, whole new replacement bodies are beingmade, using the original tooling, on a production basis to satisfy the needs of those who love their MBG's!Didn't they release the MG RV8 in England just recently? It's basicallyan slightly redesigned MGB with a Rover 8-cylinder. I've heard that they are actually using new bodies being made for these as well.
MG CAR PARTS : MY recommendation if you buy an MGB is to replace the stock carb with a Webber downdraft. On the more practical side, I would suggest a 70-73 MGB. They were the nicest looking of the B's, they are most widely andeasily reconised by the chrome bumpers. Since theMGB, like the XKE have a uni-body stucture (the body is the frame essentially),is that area is rusted out, you are likely to have your car bend in half !!!... )I pretty much second what everybody else says, except to emphasize thatyou should join the local MGCC chapter. People there will understand thecar, they will probably know the history of the one you are looking at,and will be able to help you avoid a turkey. MG CAR PARTS : The real problem is that until five years ago, these were undervaluedcars that kids bought to beat around in. When something broke, it oftengot "fixed" with whatever was at hand. I think I have seen EVERYTHINGon sports cars of the 60s and 70s, from bolts driven in with a hammer,to wires soldered across fuse blocks, to structural rust "repaired" withtightly strung piano wire! They are getting old enough tat the reallybad examples are disappearing, but you really do need to know these carsto understand some of the funnies. The Brits do do things differently.For example, through the early MGBs they used a positive groundelectrical system. Instead of a 12 volt battery the used 2 six voltunits in series. The shocks are oil filled lever units that are rebuiltinstead of replaced. They need to be maintained and not run dry. Wirewheels use a splined hub which has a tendency to wear and is quiteexpensive to replace.
