MAZDA CAR PARTS : Hi,What type of brake pads should I get for my 95? What's the differencebetween the front and rear pads? From: ()Subject: Re: Which brake pads? Newsgroups: Date: 1997/09/18 Adrian,We've just had this discussion, at length...you can check the thread,"Dealer or Auto Store Brake Pads." Some of us feel that there are lessexpensive, equal-quality replacement sets on the aftermarket, whichhappen to cost much less.It would be a good idea to check if the rotors need resurfacing. Howmany miles are on your car?--------- Akira'96 Chaste A/T First Coast Miata Club & MCANo, it's not a good deal. You can get a set of excellent pads from yourlocal car parts store for less than *half* of what Roebuck charges forMazda's overpriced crap. And if you get a good set of reputableaftermarket pads, they will perform every bit as well as OEM, despite therantings of certain people here who have no comparative experience at all.

MAZDA CAR PARTS : Adrian:At a bare minimum, get the pads from Roebuck Mazda. They are the"original" equipment and are specifically designed for that car. Myneighbor, who much like the money saving Lucas boy, tried to save a littlemoney on his convertible rabbit by using a less expensive electric motor toreplace the one used to cool the radiator...well guess what?...theaftermarket electric motor "worked" only because it looked and sounded likeit did, but actually the car ran so hot because that little electric motorcould not do the job that the "factory" motor was designed to do...he nowhas a lovely rabbit convertible with a blown head gasket etc...and he willstill have to purchase the oem product if he wants to remedy hissituation...The point is, that despite the fact that aftermarket brake padsmay look like they fit "just as well" and "feel" like they work just aswell...this is your car. If you feel comfortable putting in cheap brakepads (presumbly from Lucas' favorite after market store Pep Boys) thenthat's fine. But brakes are too serious a subject to even discussattempting to save $40.00 or so. There are a very few people in thisnewsgroup who will encourage you to buy cheap...but they tend to live onthe edge of all of this...and, of course they have their place in theextreme outer end (2.2%) below the bell curve. These are the guys who drive"automatic" transmissions and sit back at home and type you messages on

MAZDA CAR PARTS : Does anyone have any objective information about parts or is all this just"I think...you think"? I've a friend that pays top dollar for everythingand has all his work done by the original dealer. He's got the money. Idon't. His cars don't seem to be any safer than mine. So, I'm gonna go tomy local Pep Boys and get some front pads for my silver '91 (RayBestos, ifthey got 'em) and put them onto my resurfaced front rotors and have at it.I've left word with my wife to report back to you guys any bad things thatmight happen. (...I wouldn't hold my breath, though...) But, please, Keepup the debates, they're fun to read!!I'm with you all the way, Rick, with one exception: When *I* do thebrakes on our cars -- Miata included -- I ask the child-bride to takeit for a test drive *first*. It's a test of her confidence in me. ;-)

MAZDA CAR PARTS : Well, Jim, I haven't chuckled this much from a comment in a long time.Wonder if my wife will find it as humorous. Keep the wit coming.I know we've beaten this topic to death on the previous thread which Imentioned in an earlier post.FWIW most of those of us who posted in the last discussion, HAVE hadactual experience: hands-on, repeated, verifiable. I helped a friendthrough two brake changes on his '90 and he assisted me (and let me takeadvantage of his previous mistakes, hence my suggestion to turn therotors) on mine. Eric Lucas has used A/M pads on several cars and livedwith the results for months and miles, with NO problems. I'd think youwould find many people on RAMMM who enjoy the rituals of the regularduties rather than farming the job out to a shop, and would be able toadd their considerable knowledge to the subject. As this is animportant topic for this forum, I would welcome their participation.

MAZDA CAR PARTS : I held the Mazda pads and the A/M pads in my own hands and physicallycompared the two because, as I had believed years ago, the OEM were"supposed to be measurably better." I was "educated" quickly by tryingthis theory in the RW.Rick, I'm confident that your experience will be similar to ours. Ihave nothing against OEM parts; on the contrary, I still feel thatthere are "best case scenarios" in which it's ridiculous to substitute. In most other cases, though, on simple maintenance items, the A/M is farand away the best VALUE (with all that word implies, perceived value aswell as actual cost savings).Sorry to those who feel this topic has been overdone, but I felt it wasimportant to be heard clearly above the "noise" that has lately beeninfecting RAMMM.
