JUNKYARD CAR PARTS : It's asinine to compare the prices of used parts for a 23 year old Dodgewith a relatively new Volkswagen. Have you seen the prices for new partsat the local Dodge dealer? The prices for "domestic" and "imported" arevery similar (many "domestic" car parts are imported now anyway). To make an accurate comparison, we should compare prices of parts foryour car to those of a '74 Beetle. Sorry, but the Beetle is still muchcheaper to operate than your Dodge. It's fine if you want to drive the car you have, and play scavengerevery time you need parts. There are many people out there who have givenup that "hobby", or at least keep it as a hobby, and drive a newer, morereliable cars when they really have to get where they're going, or want todo it in comfort.
JUNKYARD CAR PARTS : Just wondering if anyone else has watched the tv show "Junkyard Wars"?It on the TLC channel here. Done in England so the "humor" and terminology area bit strange. On Shenandoah Ave in Roanoke VA, the Star City Partswrecking yard had, as well as cars, busses, mobile homes damagedin-transit, a wrecked bulldozer, wrecked cement trucks filled withhardened cement, a busted up car crusher from another junkyard (don'task me why), a variety of saw mill hardware, pump/well drillingaparatus, and a commercial airliner... a Piedmont Airlines Martin 404that was scrapped after having been badly damaged with a fork liftfollowing some doofus retracting the landing gear while it was in formaintenance/service and dropped it on its' belly in the middle of thenight at the end of a runway at Roanoke Municipal Airport. The bigforklift was used to lift the airplane up a corner at a time so as tocrank the landing gear back down and tow the airplane off the runwaybefore the airport opened in the morning, but the forklift operatormanaged to pierce a wing and break a main spar, which automaticallyrendered the airplane as no longer air-worthy. It got parted out (yep,airliners get parted out too) and the remains sold to Star City Parts. The stripped airplane sat in the junkyard in pieces, stripped to thebones, for something like 15 years before it was finally hauled off torecycle the aluminum when the parts yard moved across the street to alarger place. Of course, the yard also had car parts, bought more thana few. My ancient AFB that's still working today and still not rebuiltcame off a junk engine that was lying on the ground in the open at thatjunkyard.
JUNKYARD CAR PARTS : Star City Parts became rather popular around town as "the junkyard withthe airplane". Later on, it achieved some notoriety for having acouple of guard dogs stolen one night, chains cut. Now much of a guarddog is it when the dog gets stolen? Anyway, the airplane is gone, finally. The local Piedmont people werelikely embarrassed over it seeing as how Star City stuck the airplanefuselage where it was clearly visible from the highway, seeing as howeven though the airline logo and trim was painted out before it ended upthere, everybody knew it was a Piedmont airplane. Roanoke VA. One of the nicest cities in the US. Roanoke is an Indian word forMoney. The also make some very good Moonshine down there. Real professionalstuff. You can run your 440 on it with 12:1 compression.
JUNKYARD CAR PARTS : Well, actually it's Franklin County VA that holds the title of"Moonshine Capital Of The USA". It's about 15 miles south of Roanokecity. Lately, the "smart fellers" among the ridgerunners in Franklin Cohave taken to being suppliers of bootleg whiskey raw materials, sellingtons of sugar, barley, you name it.. to smaller outfits hidden away inthe mountains etc. Recently there was a bust in Boone's Mill (theswinging metropolitan "hot spot" of Franklin County)involving awholesale's outfit that was selling sugar and dry grain (cracked corn)by the ton, plastic 1-gallon jugs by the hundreds, and copper tubing inmassive quantities... and keeping no records as to who bought the stuff,"cash tickets". Seems they got into trouble because of sales taxproblems, unreported sales and failure to report tax exemption data frompurchasers for the wholesale distribution of materials. Or something. It's always something.
