INFINITI CAR PARTS : The new Infiniti Q45 has the kind of wondrous all-around prowess thatreputations for built on -- big reputations. It will be a whilebefore we can affix our test equipment to the flanks of the productionversion, but after three days of a prototype test in Arizona, webelieve that the Q45 will prove itself a thoroughbred. It should bustout of the starting gate and hit 60 in a mere seven seconds and willlikely cover the quarter-mile in 15 seconds at 90 mph. A speedlimiter in the engine control computer will hold terminal velocity to150 mph, though the Q45 could probably climb close to 160 if theengineers loosened the reins.Previously the only big luxury sedans with this kind of inspirationalspeed wore German name badges and cost enough to keep you awakenights. Now Nissan has launched a new luxury car -- and a whole newdivision -- that leapfrogs America's luxury automobiles and plants achallenge for supremacy directly before the front gate of BMW,Mercedes, and Audi.

"we don't really expect tolure very many Mercedes drivers out of thier cars" states Infinitiproduct development manager Peter Harris. Those owners are deeplyentrenched, willing to pay fat sums for the gold plated image ofBimmer's and Benz's. And everyone knows it takes equal parts of time,tradition and engineering might to build a mystique you can bank on.Instead, Infiniti will take another road falling back on strategy thatserved Japanese carmakers so well in the past: build a competitive carand sell it for less -- a lot less. If Nissan has it figured right,and we think it does, the new Q45 will draw most of early admirersfrom the new generation: younger buyers weaned on Japanese cars whoare now entering their peak earning years.

Whether you're comparing comfort, speed,vehicle dynamics, refinement, design, or quantity of luxuryappointments, Infiniti delivers as much or more than the Germansupercars for tens of thousands less.In terms of size and bulk, the Q45 is every bit the equal of itsEuropean rivals. Available only as a four-door, it is about twoinches longer than the 750iL and eight inches shorter than 560 SEL.And at roughly 3850 pounds, is no lightweight. The Q45 and interiordimensions are in the same league as well, meaning that the cabin hasenough room to bring a smile to an NBA players' face.
