IMPORTED CAR PARTS : (fwd) Vietnam to temporarily suspend increased tariffs on imported car parts AP - Fri Dec 27,12:33 AM ET HANOI, Vietnam - Apparently bowing to pressure from foreign carmakers,Vietnam's Ministry of Finance on Friday decided to indefinitely suspend newtariffs on imported car parts. Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung signed a decision to postpone until furthernotice an earlier plan to double tariffs on imported car parts beginning Jan.1, according to an official in the ministry's general tax department. "The minister sees some difficulties the carmakers could face when implementingthe decision," the official said on condition of anonymity. However, Vietnam will be pushing auto manufacturers to increase their usage oflocal car parts, the official added. "If carmakers fail to implement their commitment on localization program, theministry will propose to the government to withdraw their investment licenses,"she said.
IMPORTED CAR PARTS : Foreign automakers with assembly operations in Vietnam lauded Friday'sdecision, which came one week after representatives from Toyota, Daewoo, andFord met with Vietnamese officials to urge a reversal in the tariffs. "It's good news for us," said Nguyen Tam, a spokeswoman for Toyota Motor Co.,which heads up the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association, a group thatrepresents the country's 11 foreign carmakers. The Dec. 4 decision by the Ministry of Finance would have doubled the tariff onimported car parts to 40 percent in January, followed by a further increase to70 percent by 2004 — a move that foreign manufacturers said would killedtheir fledgling operations here. The government had initially argued that the move was necessary to forcecarmakers to increase their usage of local parts, which now only account forfive percent to 10 percent of the total.
IMPORTED CAR PARTS : Hi to all electronics repair people and others,please help me with this situation if you can, this analogyis about a car, but please read on to see my point/questions....I purchased an imported car....At 6 months old my son decides to smash the windscreen witha cricket ball, so I decide to repair it myself (I've doneplenty before) The importer refuses to sell me a windscreen, saying thatonly their own authorised dealers can buy parts. I contact a dealer, and they tell me that they are repairersonly, and I cannot buy parts from them, THEY must supply andfit the windscreen and charge me as they see fit for the job. So I contact the importer, and they say that the vechiclemust be repaired by their dealer as it is still under warranty,so I ask if they will do it under warranty, they say 'NO!' whichin itself is understandable, but I own the car 100%, and I cando what I want to it can't I? If I decide to void the warrantythen I can, it's my car. BTW, the dealers are under-instructionby the importer not to sell parts to anyone, or they are inbreach of their dealership agreement.
IMPORTED CAR PARTS : So, now I have a broken car, and no parts available, and I amforced to take it to a special dealer and pay their rates tohave it repaired, NO-CHOICE, BAD-LUCK. This is the policy toall their cars, new and old, even it they are 5 years old, sothe warranty issue is not an issue anyway! Now, I am sure I heard about a law regarding supplying sparesfor products being imported and sold within Australia, somethingalong the lines of 'Spare parts must be made available for 7 yearsafter the date of sale.' Is this true? If so, is supplying arepair-service enough, or must the PARTS be available alone?Now, my real problem is with an expensive piece of consumer electronics in the exact same situation, 'NO PARTS AVAILABLE' except to an eleite-few who don't sell them, but charge what they want when they fix it for you. I am being held firmly by the short-and-curlies by a well-known electronics distributor, and wanted to know if anyone else finds the same situation, and if the law is on my side somehow, and would it be anydifferent if I was repairing the unit for someone else?
