IMPORT CARS AND PARTS : I am a Canadian PR. I have a '95 Ford Contour and a '88 Honda Accord. Ihave planned to imported them to Canada (they are listed in the "good tofollow"). I am confused with the procedure for importing vehicles toCanada, especially with all the modifications required on the vehicle. Mysimple questions are that is it worth it (time and money) to import avehicle to canada? And, would I be better of buying a new vehicle inCanada? Any experiences?I'll assume these vehicles were originally built for, and purchasedin, the US. Vehicles built for Europe, Asia, or any other part of theworld except the US can generally =not= be imported for use in Canada. You appear to be in luck as far as modifications are concerned.According to Transport Canada's web site ---- an '88 Honda Accord should be acceptable for importation to Canadafrom the US without any modifications at all. A '95 Ford Contour (likealmost any '90 or later model) will require daytime running lights(DRL's) to be added, but it should be acceptable for importation with-out any other modifications.

IMPORT CARS AND PARTS : You will need to contact the "Registrar of Imported Vehicles" (RIV;) for detailed instructions on how to import yourvehicles. You will have to pay a processing fee of C$182 per car. You'll also have to have daytime running lights (DRL's) added to theFord; it's probably better to have this done in Canada after youimport the car, since few (if any) US mechanics will have any ideaof what they would need to do or how they should do it.Once each car has gone through federal processing (the RIV stuff),you'll have to get them registered in your new province or territoryof residence -- a process which will involve getting local insurance, and probably also getting each car to pass a provincial safetyinspection. Check with your provincial/territorial motor vehicleoffice (called "Ministry of Transportation" or "MTO" in Ontario; I'mnot sure what it's called in other parts of Canada).

IMPORT CARS AND PARTS : As for whether it is "worth it" to import your cars, as opposed toselling them in the States and buying something new in Canada, you'llhave to make this decision for yourself. Things you might want toconsider, though, might include the following:How easy will it be for you to get maintenance and replacement partsfor your cars? I lived in Ontario from 1993-97 and brought my HondaAccord with me; I continually ran into problems getting the rightparts, because the Canadian-model '84 Accord was a completely dif-ferent vehicle from the '84 Accord sold in the US. My local HondaMany people find that the alterations required to licence the cars, especially older ones, make it impractical.Jim HumphriesI brought a 98 Honda Civic. It cost me about $300 to convert it. Oldercars may have more of an issue. As you may know, you have to call the'vehicle import department' (whatever it was called) to find out aboutyour specific models.

IMPORT CARS AND PARTS : Note: US Customs expects you to get a clearance for taking the carout. This is considered "export"! Strictly speaking, however, thisdoes not seem to be enforced. I can tell you about what happens at the border, and what you may needto do afterwards, but that would take some time. So I'll just tell youthis ...... In _my_ experience, NO!Depending on the car (eg if it's a recent model, and completely paidfor, and there have been no recalls against it, and ...) it _may_ beworth it to bring a car back. In general, however, with the cost oftowing the car back, and the paper work/modifications, and the loss ofvalue in exchange rate (a car you could sell for $5000 USD in the US,would be worth $5000 CDN in Canada), I'd say sell the cars!Next time, _I_ would!

IMPORT CARS AND PARTS : Maggy I did import a Honda Civic Coupe 96 that I bought for US$5200(CAN$7800) in USA. I have been looking in the newspapers in Toronto and thiscar worth (CDN$10000).. Ok so far you can save $2200 but here are theexpenses that you will encounter:7% GST: $ 5468% PST: $ 624RIV Fees: $ 120Modifications $ 200Emission/Safety Test $ 90Registration $70Gas $150So in conclusion I cost me almost the same, plus I had to spend a lot oftime doing all this... I won't think about importing a car again intoCanada.. Cars are definetly cheaper in USA but with all these expenses itwill reduce to the same.. So you better buy your car here !!!An immigrant does not pay these taxes when importing the carincidental to landing.Without costs that vary by province, $1640. Minus costs that settlersdo not pay, it's down to $470. Minus gas (remember, you rmileage mayvary (8-) ), $320.
