HONDA CIVIC CAR PARTS : That same problem (too many different designs, too few parts in common) isalso why dealerships are charging so much for parts. Auto manufacturers arerequired by law to keep parts available for a certain amount of time. Thatrequires a whole lot of storage space somewhere, being taxed an inventorytax every year. What's the solution? I don't know. I'd suggest to automakers that they try to make new cars backwards-compatible with older cars, e.g. the way that a 1967 VW could be retrofitted with the improved shroud and oil cooler ofthe 1971 VW, except that probably wouldn't go over well with the "Design isEverything" philosophy rampant in the auto world today, where nothing issacred and everything ripe for change because the public demands New New Newand they fear they'll be left behind if they only do incremental changes ofthat sort. Never mind that it works for the Swedes. They're a specialcase, obviously.
HONDA CIVIC CAR PARTS : If I want to drive a car forever, I'm not going to buy a new Japanesecar or a new American car. They're disposable. The moment the law saysauto manufacturers can do so, parts will become unavailable. Built-inobsolescence, sigh. If I wanted to run forever, I'd buy some oldDetroit iron (so many millions of them made that junkyards are full ofthem and aftermarket suppliers thrive), or a Volvo, or a Mercedes, oran old VW Beetle (again, millions made, and a thriving aftermarket). Iseriously doubt that five years from now my mother will be able tokeep her Honda Civic running. The engine rebuild she had at 150,000miles was only barely possible last year... by the time she has300,000 miles on the car, pistons and valves will no longer beavailable for it and even the cylinder head won't be available. SinceHonda changes their design every four years, junkyards are unlikely tohave enough of that particular cylinder head for even the junkyard tobe a solution... only a few hundred thousand of that particular headfor 1600cc engines were sold as part of new cars. And of course valveguides and valve seats aren't available even NOW...
HONDA CIVIC CAR PARTS : Well, the radiator, axles, ignition system, braking system and exhaustall need to be replaced. This is about $2000 and seems to hit youaround the 7-9 year mark that all this needs to be replaced. The 'Daytime Light Running Relay' needs to be replaced on my Lemon. I honest to God can't go 3 months without this car breaking in someway. 3 months.. no 4 months ago it got towed for over heating when thefan switch went. Never again. Of course, I'm not going to blame Honda. It's just an old economy car.Parts need to be replaced on old cars. If you neglect the car it'swhole life, everything will hit you at once like it's hitting me. I amdisappointed with Honda in general as an owner. I don't want to buyanother Honda again and would only consider the Prelude.
HONDA CIVIC CAR PARTS : Don't get me wrong, I used to really love my car and be a proud ownerwhen I first got it last summer. I loved the 'H' symbol on thesteering wheel and was very happy to be part of the rice thing. -High revving engines that are VERY slow and burn tons of oil-Thin, warped sheet metal. -Rust all over the place in given time. -Tinny feeling with no sound insulation-Rough ride with degradable brakes-And not reliable once they get old. I mean, it's *normal* to burn as much oil in a 94 Integra as Steveburns in his 1987 Mustang 5.0 which does 0-60 in 6 sec.So I see Honda cars for what they really are. My main problem are theengine power, oil burning, and sheet metal. Lexus solves all three ofthese problems plus gives me even better reliability.

Looks like Saturn is the only sensible car choice left...Yes -- General Motors has such a great history of customer-care... ;-)You know, Saturn represents such a radical departure from the GM norm,that I really don't even consider them to be part of GM.On some of their own literature, GM also maintains the distinctionbetween Saturn and the rest of the pack. For example, a while backthere were advertisements here on campus for a GM credit card whichpromised discounts on purchases of GM cars. At the bottom, it listedout all of the eligible makers, and Saturn wasn't one of them.Of course Saturn is owned by GM, but I really consider them to bea whole other company entirely.Also, if I'm not mistaken, the source of inspiration for their engine was the Integra's engine. At least they are looking in theright places for guidance!
