GERMAN CAR PARTS : That tail light is for a 1991 3 series, not a new one :-) The new 3 partsare about $350 - they are much more complicated. I'm just checking retail ona new Kia right now: The caepest is the Rio 1.5 with no options at $19,995.Hmmm... maybe I should start exporting German car parts to the US :-) WithOUr exchange rate being crap, it would be a lot easier :-).............Your experience in New Zealand is the exact opposite of what'sseen here in North America. Japanese & Korean OEM parts are much, much lessexpensive than those from any of the German car companies here in the US.I'm guessing that there are factors where you live that are artificiallyincreasing some of these prices (tariffs?). Maybe we're paying a lot morefor German parts here. I like BMW's and would enjoy having a 3 series forsure, but the maintenance & repair costs for late model BMWs, VWs, Porsches& MBs are much higher here compared to Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, etc.
GERMAN CAR PARTS : Ohhh yeah my parents used to have an ol' Mercedes Diesel station wagon. Manthat thing was just a big lug, but it was pretty reliable! The only carI've ever driven where you could literally push the gas pedal to the floorand not much would happen... :-P The only thing about German brands is thatthe parts are so damn expensive.Seeing as how for my first car there was no way I could afford any real goodGerman brands.... I went for the dependable Honda Civic... Good car!! ButI think I prefer Toyota over Honda for general reliability. My parents havehad a Toyota Camry for 7 years (they bought it new in '95) and haven't hadONE problem. They just had it emission tested (an Ontario thing) and theguy said the car was so clean you could put a hose from the exhaust into theinterior in the car and sit in there and you would be fine!!! LOL!!! As forstraight looks and style.... I'd have to go with the Mazda Miata. Alwayshad a thing for that little sports car. GERMAN CAR PARTS : yeah, I wouldn't wanmt to actually have to drive a Mercedes Diesel (I think supposedly they are getting better about that whole thing doesn't accelerate at all thing).Actually, the parts for my BMW aren't much more if not the same and sometimes cheaper than my Nissan Pathfinder's was. That though is because I know where to look and I can get my roommate to fix my car. If I had to go to the dealer to get parts or fixed, I couldn't afford it. I had an old 1973 Porsche when I was in college and I afforded that because my dad used to own a mechanic shop (he is retired now and lives in Atlanta. Only reason I finally agreed to sell the thing si I moved to Seattle where he cannot fix my car).I think today Japanese car parts are not all that cheap even compared to German car parts. GERMAN CAR PARTS : I think I'd prefer Civic myself. Heard some bad Toyota stories (that and HOnda though a little overpriced is no where near as overpriced as Toyoat seems to make their cars). My roommate's mom bought a Camry no longer than a year ago and I think she already had to have the transmission worked on. Heh,never was big on the MIata's looks though I have to admit I think I like the new model Miata a lot (they didn't do a big change, some subtle stuff, but it really improves the looks). Apparently very well built and fun to drive cars though. I myself would want an NSX if we are talking Japanese sports cars but that is *way* above my budget (when I have a budget of about 3000 for a car, evne the Miata is too expensive for me). GERMAN CAR PARTS : I've had Toyotas Corollas since '84 - they are incredibly reliable. Afriend has had Camrys for about as long; same experience. I keep each onefor about 6 years, sometimes 7 - just before its resale/trade-in valuestarts to go down too much, so that I have a decent down-payment on the nextone. (Hondas are most likely just as dependable, I just personally preferthe Toyotas' designs; have always looked at both.)--"Staccato signals of constant information..."("The Boy in the Bubble") Paul SimonHeh, I'm different. I like Honda designs (specially some of the Acuras) over Toyota. A lot of Toyota designs (save the SUVs which I prefer TOyota over the little Honda has to offer) seem to "fluffy" for me. Hondas just look a lot more aggressive to me and less boring. Of course on design only I think I prefer Italian cars ;).
