FOREIGN CAR PARTS : bbb wrote:There are a lot of other profits to be made than the car itself. I thinkit is called the trickle effect. All or most of the parts that make upthe car are made from out sources from all over the country. It spreadsfar and wide. Farther than I could even imagine. A lot of mouths to feedthere. Anything from the switches to transmissions to windshields to theseats. I try to support my neighbors by shopping in my small town whenpossible. bbb wrote:So do I. But for some reason a lot of other people do not see it thatway.bbb wrote:I do. It is the best way to get friendly with your local mechanic. Younever know when you will need him. Again I will ask: Are foreign countries driving our cars like we aretheirs? I don't think so. They would not hear of it. Yet we do and inmass quantities. Next time you are driving down the road look and seehow many cars are foreign (Japanese) verses American cars. I have doneit and it is staggering. There must be a reason why at American car manufacturing plants, if youwork there and drive a foreign car you have to park in a separateparking lot way far away from the plant. It would be a slap in the faceif they did not do that. Someone working for a American car company anddriving to work in their "little" foreign car. Don't you see howridiculous that is and sounds?I tell you this, if I did live over there (another country) I woulddrive the car that is made over there. Where ever I was at.
FOREIGN CAR PARTS : I just got a car this past weekend from unknow orgins (no manual orservice records.) It was a great deal, but there are some minorthings to do. One of them is replace the CV boots (they're cracked). I was planning on doing the CV Boot ReplacementI've been reading many of the past articles about VW boot replacement. The car comes from an unknown past (just bought it last friday). Itis a 90 Jetta GL with 125k Miles on it. Everything seems to be ingreat condition, just needs touchups here and there. The CV boots aretorn are getting replaced. At first I was just going to do the CV boot replacement (as onPencilneck's team). I even ordered outter boot replacement kit frompottermans. But after reading alot of people's suggestions on here,I'm now pondered into just replacing the whole axle. That way I don'thave to deal with replacing the CV boots, if the joints were nearingthe end of their lives, then they'd be replaced. Plus most peoplehave said that theirs come with lifetime or 25,000 mi warrenties. FOREIGN CAR PARTS : Where online can i find these axle replacement "kits," we have aAutoZone in town, but I'd prefer some place that knows where Germanyis. The more that I think about it, the more i just want to replacethe whole axle, CV joint and all. Not deal with all that... althoughif people think it'd be better to do something else, I'm more thanhappy to get my hands dirty :)I opted for the replace the whole shaft method when I did it. I did have abad outer joint and unknown milage on the car. Some people here questionedthe quality of the remanufactered shafts but mine came with a lifetimewarrenty. I've had mine in and out now about 4 times for other repairs andonce you done it once it is easy. So it they were to fall apart I'd just goget new ones. Before you start make sure you have the right tools if theyhave the original bolts on the inner joint then you will need the tri-squaretool to remove them (no they are not allen bolts). Also you will need a bigbreaker bar for the axle nut and someway to apply they 170+ ft-lbs of touquewhen you put it back on. FOREIGN CAR PARTS : Yes it's not that hard and the breaker bar is easy too.Go to a hardware store and go to the pluming section.Take your 1/2 drive wrench in with you, make sure they know you brought itin, and find a length of pipe that is about 3-4 feet long and that thewrench handle will fit in. Once you do there's your breaker bar for about$3.00 and this will break the wrench before you ever stress the pipe. Havehad one for 12 years now from the day I broke a 4 way lug wrench trying tojust remove lug bolts that NTB had impacted onto the car as if they were tonever come off again. The special tool referred to is a 12 point 8mm Axle bolt tool. Can be foundat most decent foreign car parts stores. Buy one and an 8mm socket for a3/8th drive and if you can drill a hole through the socket and tool and thendrive a piece of metal through the hole so the tool stays in the socket. Orwhat you can do is go around town looking at repair shops and when you see ashop with a "Snap On" truck Or I think Metco tools or any other tool truckthat sells to shops walk up and ask for this very tool and but it they havethe best tools but cost a little extra. FOREIGN CAR PARTS : Wow! Anyways, with the car on the ground use the pipe and 1/2 wrench with anextension and a 32 mm (I think) socket and loosen the axle nut. Jack up thecar, and put jack stands under. Then loosen the six 12 point bolts andremove replace with new axle and reverse process. As far as finding an axle look for a good foreign car parts store and theyshould have it. I learned to do this in a store parking lot on a 83 Rabbitabout 12 years ago and it wasn't that bad and I felt very proud of myselffor doing it. So you can do it.I had to replace mine about 70 miles out in the California desert a fewweekends ago. Luckily I carry the triple square tools in my tool box(had to rent the 30mm axle nut socket - will be throwing one of those inthe box too) and we did it in the dirt and wind in under 2 hours. Axlewas $80 with lifetime warrantee. It seemed to be new CVs on it, theyseemed nice and tight.
