EURO CAR PARTS : I have an astra, and i replaced the front discs at about 75,000. Cost about$200 to buy DBA discs from Autobarn and fitted em' myself, couldn't beleivehow easy it was (I ain't a mechanic)In my experience as a Euro car mechanic most Opel products, and forthat matter any car that uses German ATE brand brake parts from thefactory (which includes Opel, BMW, Benz, Volvo and others) have ahealthy appetite for brake pads and rotors. ATE is making brake rotorsand pads as soft as possible from the factory for better brakingperformance, the downside being short component life. It is acomplaint that many other euro car owners have made. My experiencesuggests average life span for ATE rotors is 40-50,000klm nowadays,even less if you use the brakes hard.
EURO CAR PARTS : There seems to be a shortage of supply of aftermarket brake parts forOpels in Australia. Usually a non-dealer Euro mechanic would call upsomeone like Euro Car parts and ask for ATE boxed brake rotors, whichare exactly the same as GM boxed brake rotors, but usuallysignificantly cheaper. However most vendors seem to run out of stockon Opel parts very quickly. You may like to try a company like EuroCar parts, and if they do not have stock on them than you may be ableto backorder the rotors, and then pay an independant mechanic to fitthem.That is absolutely correct. The reason why a lot of Euro pads/discswear so fast is because they are very abrasive/soft which provide forexcellent braking, albit at the expense of faster wear. You can'thave it both ways unfortunately, and on the highspeed Euro highwaysyou do need good brakes for the inevitable.
EURO CAR PARTS : If Holden were to spec the Euro imports with harder discs and lessharsh pads, people would then probably complain about less brakingperformance. It is only under very low mileage rates on discs/padsthat warranty would be granted due to these reasons.A typical stop/start city driver who rides their brakes will gothrough pads and discs faster than they are going through fuel. IMHObrakes should either be fully on, or fully off, with a minimal amountof time being half on, otherwise you heat up the pads and discs sincethere is no air gap to cool down inbetween sucessive braking.You can't get something from nothing. Just like people who wantbrakes that could stop a semitrailer, but cost nothing to maintain andgive no brake dust. Everything is a compromise.
