CUSTOM CAR PARTS : Most of you probably remember the packs that Revell and I think AMTdid in the early '60's . Custom interiors, bumpers, wheels/tires, etc.Even engines. Even dragster frames.I know that the engines have been re-released, but how about some moremodern stuff? Like a 5.0 EFI Ford, etc, and not all chrome plated. And interior packs with new style bucket seats, steering wheels,cdplayers for the dash, etc. What do you guys think?russFrom responses on other boards from people in the business, the sales of theoriginals parts packs were so poor that it's not even a consideration to putout modern ones. The cost of tooling, packaging, and shipping would put theprices too high as well.,I'm feeling much better now.......
CUSTOM CAR PARTS : Rusty is absolutely on target. Custom car parts packs were tried by everyonein the business in the 60's, they looked sooo good, to modelers, and retailersalike, but guess what? Within less than a year, Revell, Aurora and AMT weredumping unsold stocks of these at closeout prices, simply because they did notsell.Revell even tried them again in the late 1970's, for the then highly popularvans and mini-pickups, and guess what? They died big time then too.Even Revell's SSP parts packs reissues of 1997 died, to the point that somehobby shops STILL have them. Granted, they were very old tooling, but thesubject matter was still very wanted, but guys just wouldn't pay the price thathad to be charged, to make them happen.
CUSTOM CAR PARTS : It costs just as much in production time to make a tree of these parts as itdoes for a tree of parts for an ordinary model kit, and the packaging costs arejust as high as well, but the sales just didn't come.Don't look for anyone to do this sort of parts pack again anytime soon, I justdon't see it happening.Not even for small scale production (resin/vacuform/photoetch/whatever)?I believe the original poster referred to the major manufacturers doing "partspacks" for model car kits, just as they did back in the early 1960's. That inall likelihood will never happen again, they just did not sell.As for resin & photo etched parts for model cars, those cottage industries havebeen around for 15-20 years already, still going strong.
CUSTOM CAR PARTS : Hi all,I just got back into model building after about 10 years. I built A fewkits the stock way to get up to speed but now I want to build customcars that I can't afford in 1:1 scale. For instance I'm now building A68 Mustang fastback with A fuel injected 351 with A supercharger,Lowered, 4 wheel disk brakes, and the Shelby scoops and tail lights.I am also starting A Boss 429 Torino by mixing the 70 Boss 429 Mustangand that beautiful new 70 Torino kit. After that will be my dream bigblock Bronco.So as you can see I want to do some unusual things and I need some help.First is there something I can use to temporarily hold parts togetherwhile I cut, file, and test fit things? Like some kind of putty?? WhatI'm doing now is using A tiny amount of glue to hold things and cuttingit back apart, or just gluing things together and if it's not right Ifill in any gaps with Testers body putty.
CUSTOM CAR PARTS : Second can anyone recommend A place to get custom part's like wheelsand tires, engine parts ect?The 68 Mustang I'm building is getting parts from : 99 Mustang Cobra (wheels/tires, spindles, brakes and mufflers) 95 Mustang Cobra (engine,exhaust pipes, seats) 67 Shelby GT350 (side scoops, tail lights, floorconsole) I'm even using parts from A 79 F 350 to make A custom 4 linkrear suspension. So as you can see I'm going to have A lot of junk leftover. I would also like to add things like spark plug wires, heaterhoses and such so any links would really be appreciated.Since you are building Fords, be sure to place 1/25 towing straps in the trunk;+).Check the ads in the two car modeling magazines. I don't build cars myself,but there does seem to be an aftermarket that will have some of what you arelooking for. I have noticed it is mostly resin bodies, and wheels/tires. Youmay have better luck by purchasing cheap kits at a swap meet for engine stuff. Kim M
