COMPACT CAR PARTS : This is also misleading...flexible manufacturing implies addingoptional components to a baseline (like options on a car) rather thandifferent cars meant for different roles. No amount of customization/flexible manufacturing will make asub-compact into a luxury vehicle or a mini-van. Yep...they all havewheels, motors, doors, head lights, the same type of userinterface....Sure is...the funny thing is that the majority of this occurs amongsmall level one organizations...The language of choice is Visual Basic. A VB programmer has atremendous library of commercial components that she can buy and use.You can't currently build a business based on this model EXCEPT in theproblem domain covered by VB simply because the wide base of 3rd partycomponents simply doesn't exist.We use RW for utilitites, a COTS GUI product for UI work, tcl forour command parser, a IPC library for communication and we still don'tconsider ourselves in the same league as VB programmers because wecan't simply buy the components that actually pertain to our problemdomain.
COMPACT CAR PARTS : The domain is far too small to support a component builder incomparison to the business arena. We have our own libraries to besure but we'd never sell them to anyone for anything less than what itcost to produce or the cost of the entire company (whichever isgreater).What we do with our product is customization rather than flexiblemanufacturing. It is what it is and we add a/c and white wall tireswhere desired. If your requirements diverge too much from ourcapability (sub-compact car) we pretty much lose everything but ourcore shell of tools (RW, GUI, tcl, IPC)...or back to the car analogywe have a generic collection of car parts (spark plugs, hoses, belts),a dashboard, a steering wheel and a car phone.There's a lot of brand new design work to build a mini-van out ofthose basic components.
COMPACT CAR PARTS : To use another analogy...there's a lot more design work to build asingle board computer than a personal computer. The SBC builder has alot of components (CPU, memory, etc) but you can't slap it togetherlike a PC builder can slap together a power supply, mother board,chassis and disk drives.The PC clone builder has minimal design work to do...the SBC builderhas almost nothing BUT design work to do. After the prototype is doneshe ships it for someone to produce in mass quantities. They aren'tIntel...they don't have a massive production run to optimize becausethey build short run or one-off items. The process is oriented around prototyping (the hand built workingvariety) and design activity not manufacturing.The way different hardware markets go about developing productsdiffers greatly. Likewise it differs greatly in the softwarebusiness.
COMPACT CAR PARTS : SEI CMM works great from some things (avionics, embedded systems,large projects), component based development works great for somethings (VB apps), code and test aka hacking works great for somethings (short scripts in a product command language). They all havemerit AND liabilities.What we need is a firm understanding of BOTH. We never hear the downsides of these silver bullets (*) and developers who are critical ofthese methodologies are considered "doubters and complainers" [1] orworse.(*) CMM IS a silver bullet...when the only statistics you see about atechnology says 5-1 ROI, 39% defect reduction rates, 35% productivityincrease, and a median cost of $1375/programmer/year and NO reports onCMM failure rates, or project failures among level 2+ orgs you havesomething better than sliced bread or great sex (well...maybe notgreat sex). (numbers from SEI-94-TR-013)

Proceed at fullspeed...silver bullet found, onward to glory and riches."And it is treated that way..."Thou shalt be Level 3 to bid on thisproject" is very similar to "Thou must use CASE/Ada/xxx to bid on thisproject".Anyone care to tell me the maturity level of IBM FSD/FAA AAS?Anyone care to tell me how a project like Boeing/SeaLaunch would fitinto the processes at Boeing/IUS? Completely different product domainin a different development environment on a untried launch paradigmusing some components and documentation written in Russian in a two(three?) year time schedule.There's a world of difference between refining IUS attitude controlsoftware and the chaos of new product lines and new productopportunities. Not better or worse (both make money) but verydifferent and it is not apparent that a method that works for onewill work for the other.
