CLASSIC CAR PARTS : Take warning if you are planning to order parts from "The PADDOCK,Inc." I ordered parts for my car according to their catalog and theirsales personnel. Guess what, the parts didn't fit my car so I returnedthem. They did offer to exchange the parts at no charge. Alot of goodthat would do. All they could do was send me the same parts again. NoThanks! It took them over a month to credit my account and then Ididn't receive the full amount. They wanted to charge me a restockingcharge as well as for the shipping. I convinced them to refund the"restocking charge"; however, they refused to refund the shippingcharge. I could understand if I had ordered the wrong parts or hadchanged my mind, but I don't understand being penalized for theirincompetence. So, if you are thinking about ordering parts for your classic car from"The PADDOCK, Inc.", be forewarned that you will be held responsible forany and all mistakes, even theirs. They promise a 100% refund if youare not satisfied for any reason. The fine print is that they willcharge you for shipping, regardless, as well as a restocking fee.
CLASSIC CAR PARTS : If you need parts for your classic car, I suggest you contact "YEAR ONE,Inc." in Atlanta. I got the right parts for my car and I've never hadany trouble with them on returns or bad parts. There was a Ford dealer in Michigan whose parts department had a neatlittle racket going, similar to the one you describe. Local serviceshops would order parts from the dealer. The shipment always containedwrong parts. Then, when the customer returned the wrong parts, thedealer hit them with a 10% restocking fee. The independent shops gottogether and complained to Ford Motor Company. The dealer lost hisfranchise. You can be sure of one thing: your gyp mail order house isdumb like a fox. Wrong parts are a real money maker!

CLASSIC CAR PARTS : I am travelling to Cuba later this year and would love to rent one ofthe classic 50's cars for a few days to travel around part of theisland.In the "travel info" section you will find two links to places that rentclassic cars.As far as I know you can only "legaly" rent a classic with driver.No self drive as far as I know;One thing to remember is that most of those cars are rolling death trapsas no parts are available to maintain them. Classic car parts areexpensive even here in the US where they are legal and accessible. Therehave been a number of articles written in the last few years about thesecars and the majority are a hodge-podge of parts from various and nearlyincompatable sources.It says a lot for Cuban inventivenes that so many are still capable oflurching from one place to another. View them as local color andphoto-ops, but not as a viable means of transportation.
CLASSIC CAR PARTS : Say...you mean that it's not viable to put a Lada engine, a Stalinetstractor transmission and four different size tires in a '56 Chevy Impalaand expect it to be reliable?;-)I drove a 56 Chevy, a 1953 Oldsmobile and a Jeep from 1958. All in mintcondition.Need or necessity is the mother of all inventiveness andresponsible for the best or most ingenius mechanicson this part of the world...cubans who own old cars have shownthis in a very obvious way : their old chevies are still runningafter 50 years and without a provision of spare parts...LOL !True, amazing that they keep them on the road. But remember thatin the countryside you might pass a car every five minutes or so on a major road, so death trap in that sense is perhaps differentthan on a typical highway. If the rental place has "breakdown service", then you could be fine. We had great service by a nationalrental agency (on new, not classic) car rental when a gasoline filler pipe was cut.
