CITROEN CAR SPARES : I went to Midas to get a brake inspection (since it was the clocestfrom my work place) and being told that it will cost $400 toreplace front brake pads and shoes for my Olds Cutlass Spreme('84) . How could it be that expensive? The pads are about 20.00 or less, the rest is installing them ++++ a lot of mark-up . If your handy with tools buy a book, jack, jack stands & do it yourself. Takes about 20 min each. You can't have both pads & shoes, pads & rotors yes. & if the rotor is scored, then that is a lot more (machinework). It's a relatively simple job and the only special tool you need is aregular C-clamp to compress the caliper pistons before slipping the newpads in place.
CITROEN CAR SPARES : Considering that brake pads run about $10-$30 per wheel at the parts storeit's very cost-effective to DIY.Was at a Goodyear dealer last week. His posted price was about $200 for both front and back and this is NJ where everything costs more. Even if they have to turn the discs and drums and charge you extra for "semi-metallic" pads there is no way it should cost $400 unless they give you new rotors too. Shop around or do it yourself. Often you only need the front pads done anyway and they are very easy to change. Takes me less than 10 minutes a wheel. I've seen sale prices for just doing the front pads for $59. Rear brakes don't seem to wear as fast as front.

New pads for thefron end are about $90 from the manufacturer.A friend of mine works in the car spares business, and she got me some patternitems. They cost me about $40. Now I have heard all sorts of scare storiesabout different qualities of friction materials (and have experienced it, too).Some cheaper pads tend to lock the wheels more, and often do not last as long.Anyway, I bought these cheap pads. I have been using them for about 8 monthsnow, and so far, I cannot tell the difference. It was the old, old story of"dealer rips off mug^H^H^Hvalued customer".

If these people are trying to charge you $400, Iwould recommend getting someone else to do the job (probably yourself - it'sreally easy).Midas even suggested to resurface the roter even itwas totally unnecessary.After that, I went to other place, and found out thatit does not (and should not) cost $400.So now I am running with new brake shoes and pads.I feel much better now. Thanks.Well, whether or not rotors should be "resurfaced" (aka machined) at every pad replacement is actually a matter of fairly hot debate in the repair industry. Aside from that, though, if the $400 was for just standard reline front and rear, that was WAY too much. We're at the high end of the aftermarket (at least locally) at my shops, and would have wanted the following for name-brand (not Midas mystery brand) parts:
