CHEVY CAR PARTS : Norm,Thanks for the compliment, I sold the Harley some years back, justtoo dangerous to ride IMO around here.I mean't to say AMC Nash Rambler on the 327, and I do believe your rightit being a Buick/Olds block, I was replacing an ol 327 Chevy block witha rebuilt 327 Fireball many moons ago,and accidently dropped theFireball the last 2 inches, busting the cast oil pan, thought I couldswap the oil pan off the Chevy to the Fireball, but no such luck, Had toorder a new one from a parts warehouse in Wisconsin, I also remember thevalve covers being different from Chevy, Quick popoffs with just 2wingnuts attached to internal studs. UD >>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>Yup, thats the monster , all right. Mine were in a 30 ft. Chris andthey were so much heavier than the CC engines the boat was designed for, that they had to move them forward to compensate for the weight. The"pop-off" valve covers were because it had solid lifters and they hadto be adjusted periodically. It was an easy chore and I used to do mineevery other year. The valve clearances were printed right on thecovers. Had neoprene gaskest so that you didn't need to change it eachtime.
CHEVY CAR PARTS : The only parts dealer in the Detroit area at the time was ContinentalKromus. They were the service parts dealer for Continental and Graymarine. Nice people, the manager took time to give me all this infoabout the engine. I figgered you'd "been there, done it" with the Harley. I did minemany years ago. My son has a "hog" and I think he spends more timetearing it down and rebuilding it that he does riding it.Remove the "nospam" from my address to abuse my email box.======================="N.L. Eckert" wrote in message.... Since you seem to be theI have 283s in my Chris Craft but I am not enough of angine expert toknow if everything is the same. The pistons and other internal partslikely are. The cam are probably different. Most Chris Craft 283s have 4 barrels (at least everyone that I haveseen does). Mine has 4 bbl, but they are not orginal. CHEVY CAR PARTS : The 283 is also the engine often installed "backward", with theflywheel forward.I rebuilt two of them (1960 models) and recall some differences: Special alloy "hot rod" block & heads. Special tilted 4-bbl intake manifold with PCV valve and liftingring. Double-bowl carb with flame arrestor and cable throttle adapter. Forged rods. Pistons were different than a car, but I was able to replace one. Special machining on crankshaft ends (the trans connects to the endthat would be the front on a car so the flywheel faces forward). Unusual fuel pump. Unusual distributor, although a good parts counterman can find cap, points, etc. that will fit. Police type oil filter (not spin on). Special camshaft (firing order, not just duration and lift) plusspecial "snout" on it that drives the distributor which is at theopposite end of the block from where it would be on a car. The left hand engine crankshaft rotates backwards so it has timinggears instead of a timing chain and the starter, water pump andgenerator turn the other way. Special oil pump with hose inlet and pickup bolted to inside bottomof oil pan. Special cast oil pan to allow for tilt. Marine exhaust manifolds. Brass freeze plugs. Different flywheel. CHEVY CAR PARTS : Other than that, everything appeared to be the same as a car. What is the difference between a 283, 283F, and a 283M engine?I think it indicates the same size engine but made at a differenttime, so the bore and stroke are the same, but other parts can bedifferent. It would be difficult to know which parts wouldinterchange from one to another. While everyone else is bickering and flaming about who knows what, I'll tellyou about my hands on experience with the Chris Craft 283 engines.I had a '59 twin engine Chris Craft in the mid '80s. I had to do a completerebuild on them both. They are the same block and heads as the Chevy. The crank shaft is forgedand the cam shaft is for solid lifters. The engines I had were mountedbackwards with the gear box driven off the "pulley" end of the engine. CHEVY CAR PARTS : To achieve counter rotations, one engine had a chain driven cam shaft andthe other had a gear drive cam. The cams were identical but because of theirrotation the timing was weird on the one engine. The carborators were 4 barrel with a special alum. manifold and a wedge forleveling the carb. (on the normal auto engine, there was water passage thruthe intake manifold to keep it warm. On the marine engine that water portwas blanked off. (the marine engine was very cold blooded because of this). The starter was marinized and the generator was driven off a pulley on theflywheel hub. The water pumps were driven off the back end of the generatorshaft. (the main reason it would be difficult to convert to an alternator).
