CARS PART : Ore cars get very dirty, which means heavy weathering, which tends to coverup detail. Whatever colour they started as, they became a nice iron oxide allover pretty quickly. Roadname and number would be barely legible. The only problem with Roundhouse cars is the coupler pocket cover. Theysupply a self-tapping screw to fasten the cover onto the pocket. If you goahead and drive it in, you may end up with a broken screw jammed in the hole.Drill all the way through the hole, tap it 2-56, and use a 2-56 machine screwto fasten the coupler cover.I don't know of a reference that gives the history of ore cars. Big gapwaiting to be filled IMO. There are many books about mining, but they tend toskimp on the railroad details that we would find so interesting.

CARS PART : -- Wolf Kirchmeir, Blind River ON Canada"Nature does not deal in rewards or punishments, but only in consequences."(Robert Ingersoll)The MDC/Roundhouse cars are in about the same league detail wise as theWalthers' ones. Neither are highly detailed, but both are decent. MDCmakes two different types, both of which are different than theWalthers' car.NOTE: The Walthers' car is a Minnesota range ca (DM&IR, GN, etc.). TheMDC cars are Wisconsin/Michigan range cars (LS&I, CNW, etc.). TheMinnesota cars are wider than the W/M cars. They look strange together, though both are reasonably accurate.Ore cars were mostly 'home road' cars, though s a few did wander aboutfor any of a variety of reasons.I should add that I was referring to the 70 ton 'iron range' ore hoppercars of Minn., Wisc., and MI. and, yes, AHM used to have one also, butit was a considerably larger car ... either a heavier prototype (100ton?), or out of scale (not sure which at the moment). It looks BIG withthe others.

CARS PART : MDC, and now Stewart, also make the mini bathtub type more modern orecars. These were used in other parts of the country, and were rarely(if at all) used in the iron ranges of the upper midwest. There WERE other designs of ore cars, like those used at the Erie Miningoperation. Some roads just liked their own styles.Ore cars were occasionally loaned/leased to other railroads. Used oneswere also bought by other railroads, many old ones were sold off forballast and similar service, so it is possible to see non-home road orecars in consists. Some ended up in the steel mills as service cars forhauling all manner of ore, scrap, aggregate, etc.Dan etal, the AHM/Rivarossi version is based on a B&LE 70 ton ore car. Ifound a picture and info in the 1941 CAR BUILDERS' CYCLOPEDIA.

CARS PART : Interesting. Then what accounts for the AHM model being perhaps 10%larger (longer, wider, higher) than the Walthers' or MDC 70 ton orecars? It's also interesting that, being a B&LE car, it was a 'reload'car, carrying ore from the lake boats down to the steel mills. This isthe service that the 'bathtub' style ore cars (MDC, Stewart) were mostlyused in.Another note. Since a LOT of coal was moving 'up the lakes' as the orewas moving down, there were a lot of loaded coal trains moving up to thelake ports. These hoppers sometimes returned with loads of ore. But 70tons of iron ore in a 70 ton coal hopper only filled it about 30% full... they LOOKED empty even when loaded to capacity. The AHM ore car IS a nice looking model, at least the equal of theothers in detail.

CARS PART : Dan, the old AHM car (now sold by IHC), is based on a B&LE 20000 series HMA1. The Walthers ore car is based on a DM&IR U29 class. I got this fromlooking at my 1953 CAR BUILDERS' CYCLOPEDIA, Canadian Issue. Mistakenly, they aren't in my 1940 copy. The B&LE cars were built by Greenville SteelCar and the DM&IR cars by Enterprise Railway Equipment. The B&LE cars were larger, dimensionally. They had a distance of 24'-6"between stiking plate faces, where as the DM&IR cars were 21'-6". Also thetop of car to rail top measurements differed. B&LE 10'-8", DM&IR 10'-2".The Inside lengths on the B&LE car was a foot longer. The AHM car measures out a little over on some of the dimensions, but thegreatest flaw is that the A and B ends are on opposite ends of the car.Someone messed up making the dies.
