CARS & PARTS : I have an opinion, it's the buyers, they come in two flavors, "old timers"and "newbies" The vendors see mostly the old timers on the NG, and at swapmeets, most newbies don't know about either one. The old timers bought therecars and parts cheap years ago and don't want to face the fact that prices havegone up. The newbies think the cars and parts are a bargain and drive themarket. The newbies pay $71 for $12 hood bumpers on Ebay and buy 5K rustbuckets and are happy. I offered Pearl to the old timers for 10K only to see it go to a newbie for16K, a $3000 53 coupe that Bob tried to sell here for 3K, brought double thatfor us on Ebay to a newbie and so on. A newbie that was shopping for $40,000 57Chevies, see a rust buck Golden Hawk for 5K reaches for his check book. You canrecognize the newbies at a swap meet they just make a stack on the table andask for a total. A perfect example is the newbie guy near me that went to York looking for aStudebaker. He was perfectly willing to buy a nice Silver Hawk for $17,500 atYork before I convinced him to shop around a little.Dick Steinkamp wrote:

If the owner had sold, he was going to restore another Stude.Ron ButtsLovely car, but might not be the sort of purchase a newbie should make withoutlooking at more than one nice car IMHO. Nice to know if he shops around, he canstill find the car near him, I'll let him know.John - I believe that you have presented a very good analysis of the situation. I do believe that Mike has skewed the price of stock Studebakers recently. Iguess that I fall into your "old timers" category. Maybe that is why I haven'tbought any cars on eBay, but I have been high bidder on a number of cars/trucks that did not reach reserve. This would indicate to me that the reserve wasset too high for the current market. The reserve was probably based on whatthe owner has in the vehicle or what he has seen what he thought to be similarvehicles go for, rather than market condition pricing. Gary L.

CARS & PARTS : I think that this mark is under valued by all here. While I know restorationis a work of love, who said it has to be a financial loss as well? Most ofthe Stude people I know are, how shall we say frugal :)I have been surfing EBay for a few years now and all the other marks go formuch higher price tags that the same condition Stude would go. I guess I'mone of the newbies as JP put it, I know I can get much more car for themoney by staying with the Studebakers. Another thing I like about thisgroup, is I have yet to meet a Studaholic I didn't like.David CarterSan Jose, CA.1950 Champion Starlight Coupe1953 Champion Deluxe 2 Dr Sedan"David Carter" wrote in message ...tend to view Stude guys with contempt. At least here in Texas. BeforeX-mas a Classic Car Club of supposedly all makes held a car show downthe highway from me at an old store, a good friend and I in hiscousins very nice 64 R1 Champ pickup showed up and walked away withone of the plaques. The store owners son was the judge. After thecontest I sat around talking and joined since most members whereneighbors. Well I have yet to here a word from them. Looks like theydon't want any Studes in the club. Studebaker's here in Texas seem toget most of the crowds and looks at the shows as most of the olderpeople had one being a cheaper make in a poorer area. The young oneshave never seen one. We also tend to out number the Detriot makeclubs. This in turn I think makes them jealous etc.Steve Barber53 2r560 Lark64 Daytona

CARS & PARTS : The bottom line is "it's your money" you can blow $126.00 for a set of'63 Lark back-up light lenses on e-bay (I'm not even going to get intothe fact that folks are "jumping" into the auction posting bids thatdrive up the price with no intention of buying the merchandise)or youcan go to swap meets and network with folks in your SDC chapter andwith the "old timers" for the parts that you need. That's what Idid... I asked, talked and networked - I ended up at a chapter meetingwith a shopping bag full of '63 back-up light lenses. "pick the twothat you think are the best" the vendor said. Two gently usedlenses...$20.00.Good point Matt.Don't really think there is an organized shill bidding setup on Ebay, but there is a lot of impulse bidding that doesn't make sense.I always get a kick out of seeing something with 30 bids on it after twodays. A quick look at the bid history shows one bid by a guy and 29 fromanother guy trying to find out the max bid from the first guy and then tryto bid 1 dollar more.......with five days left on the auction. Too funny.Snipe software works, but only if you play the max game, and then you stillhave to pay attention.I tend to not bid at all on anything, and then wait until the last day tosee where it is at.If it is still reasonable, then I will make one bid (at MY max) and seewhere it will go.My 'watch' list is always maxed out. My bid list is puny...Just like in a real 'face to face' auction, the auctioneer's job is tocreate a frenzy.Ever try to change the pace of a real 'face to face' auction? You will get some dirty looks from the auctioneer, and if you look aroundcarefully, you might find out who the shill bidders are (if there are any)...There's a guy selling some Stude stuff on Ebay right now that is dribblingstuff out on Ebay.If you ask him, you can get a list of what he has for sale.Strange, but stuff that is not on the list keeps hitting Ebay.See, he has an 'A' list for sale offline.....and an 'E'(bay) list for saleonline....Must work, as he always has bidders.....Jeff
