CAR RESTORATION PARTS : So I'm sorry your got burned, but perhaps others will learn from your misfortune.Barry L. Van Hook Management Department, College of BusinessArizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-4006Phone (602) 965-1217 FAX (602) 965-8314Don't feel alone David - I got beat for $25,000 + for a 1970 Boss 302 wherethey did not touch the engine/trans (other than paint and lose parts) and only replaced the headliner in the interior. The resulting car is very, very nice - won lots of trophys and have hadoffers to buy - but I, like you, will never the the $ out of it or get thedetails behind the fleecing. In our (wife and I) case, the shop was going out of business and we weremaking his payroll each month - I eventually got a call from someone thatknew the owner and warned me the IRS was going to close his shop (soget the car out). I did and they 1) left the rear axle dry, 2) did notproperlyalign body parts, 3) passenger door would not stay closed, 4) left 4engine /trans leaks and lost over $1000 in parts (I think they resoldthem).

CAR RESTORATION PARTS : The moral: we got taken. Remedy: enjoy the heck out of the car! 428 CJs,like Boss 302s, are fun cars - we drive ours every chance we get ...Johnn & Sheryl AudritshYellow 1970 Boss 302 (his)Orange 1970 Boss 302 (hers) Welcome to the world of auto restorations. The hard way. My fatherowned a restoration shop for 15 years and I worked part time in aMustang/FOMOCO only restoration shop off and on for about five yearsafter that. Having done more than a few Shelby/Boss/Big blockrestorations and many 'lesser' Mustang and Cougar restorations, maybe Ican shed a little light from the other side of the coin. Looking at it from my point of view, it looks like both you and theshop that did the work somewhat underestimated the work the car actuallyneeded.

CAR RESTORATION PARTS : Where should you go from here? To the car shows. Enjoy your new, 1969"R" code Mach I and chalk it up to experience. It hurts. I know. I'mreally not trying to be cold, its just a fact that this type of work isvery expensive. Litigation will get you no where. You got servicesrendered for a job well done. Unless the job is completely unacceptableor unsafe, the courts generally rule in the favor if the shop. Severaltimes we've had to go as witnesses with customers that we were suingother shops for doing 're-work' for due to a crap-ass job well done, uhh. You DO deserve a itemized bill, however. What you should also have isa fully restored to current maximum quality concours standards, correctin every manner and fully detailed inside, outside and upside down car.Correct parts with correct date codes, fasteners, paint daubs, strips, decals, components etc should be the only parts on the car. $33,000 fora *full boogie* restoration on a car that needed a lot to begin with isnot unreasonable or unheard of, especially if the car was rusty andmissing expensive components. This is especially true with Shelby,CJ/SCJ, and Boss cars.

CAR RESTORATION PARTS : One good example of where even common components can add up fast isthe rearend. Say somebody robbed the "N" case center section and 31spline axles from yor original housing and stuck "common" components inthier place. Typically used "N" case center sections run about 200-350bucks. Say the diff is an open unit and you need a Traction-loc diff, and the gears are the wrong ones or a little noisy. Add on 400 bucks fora new differential, 140 bucks for a gear set and about 100 bucks insmall parts to screw it all together. Thats over 900 dollars in parts,NOT including labor, NOT including clean-up work, NOT includingdetailing of the housing, NOT including setting up the rearend, NOTincluding the brake work or lines and NOT including 31 spline axleswhich would alone run an additional couple hundred bucks. A detailed, concours correct, ready to go, looks and operates as if it was puttogether by Ford yesterday "N" case Traction-loc or Detroit Lockerrearend could end up costing a customer 1500+ dollars.

CAR RESTORATION PARTS : this response is much like the previous one from the shop's point of view: lets see we have a :mach 1 cj car engine rebuild : if you have all correct parts ( thats a big if) cj will cost3500 -4000 just for rebuild not painted nice or detailed at all. this is also if crank shaft is good and block is good heads are correct. then if you want smog equipment add 1500 in parts no labor. and find that correct parts. ok transmission lets assume its a 4 speed car: rebuild a cj 4 speed will cost 12-1500 if parts in trans are not too bad (gear sets are good)if not add $1000 in parts no labor do you have correct shifter? good luck finding a 69 shifter thats good if you need it it will cost 400-500 . need clutch / flywheel/assy$300 next part copied from previos post
