CAR PARTS WHOLESALE : MONTEREY, Calif., Oct. 10 - Jeret Schroeder of Vineland, N.J.,improved his time by a full second Saturday in the second round ofqualifying for Sunday's VISA Sportscar Championships American Le Mansseries race at Laguna Seca Raceway. The Supreme Exhaust SystemProducts/Purity Farms/Racer Parts Wholesale #95 of Schroeder and co-driverTom Volk of Blissfield, Mich., will start 15th Sunday at noon in the2-hour, 45-minute race around Laguna Seca's hilly 2.238-mile, 11-turn roadcourse. The TRV Motorsport team has been plagued by a problem with itsengine management system which causes an intermittent and persistent missin the Riley & Scott's Chevy engine. The 20-minute second round ofqualifying Saturday afternoon was the first time all weekend that theengine did not miss, but only time will tell if the problem has beensolved or not. Schroeder's best lap in the first round of qualifying on Fridaytook 1:22.331 (97.858 mph) and put him in 15th place on the provisionalgrid. On Saturday he improved that with a circuit at 1:21.100 (99.344mph), but some other teams went faster too and he remains 15th in theunofficial 44-car starting lineup. "The engine didn't miss in that session and we did go faster, sothat's good," Schroeder said. "Unfortunately this time I had no brakes.The brake pads we put on before qualifying didn't come in.

Whether we have the problem solved or not,none of us know. We'll just have to start the race tomorrow, take thingsas they develop and hope we can finish. Tomorrow's race will be televised on CNBC on a same-day,taped-delayed basis from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT. In May Schroeder became the first New Jersey resident to make thefield for the Indy 500 in 16 years. He qualified 21st and finished 15th inhis first Indy 500 in the Purity Farms G-Force Infiniti fielded by CobbRacing and 1990 Le Mans winner Price Cobb. One other driver who ran in this year's Indy 500 is competing inthis sports car endurance race at Laguna Seca this weekend: Stan Wattles.He still start 19th tomorrow in a Riley & Scott Ford.
CAR PARTS WHOLESALE : DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 3 - About all anyone can say about TRVMotorsport's experience at the 39th annual Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona is"that's racing." The Supreme Exhaust System Products/Racer Parts Wholesale Riley &Scott Mk III Chevy #95 blew its engine early in the event Saturday atDaytona International Speedway. Engines are one of the few things that theGrand American Road Racing Association rulebook forbids a team to changeonce the green flag has dropped, so the Toledo, Ohio-based team was outwith only three laps in the books for a 79th-place finish overall. Lead driver Jeret Schroeder of Vineland, N.J., had qualified thecar ninth overall, the team's best qualifying run ever for this event, andeverything seemed in order prior to the race. At the start Schroeder dodged a huge bullet when a car spun infront of him in turn one and another car hit his exhaust pipe, but somehowhe squeezed through and escaped disaster. A few minutes later he radioedin that the car had lost power, however, and when he returned to the pitsthe team discovered that there was Red Line oil all over the enginecompartment.
CAR PARTS WHOLESALE : At first the team thought it was just an oil leak, but uponfurther investigation they learned that a piston had failed. Co-driversJohn Mirro of Bath, Pa.; Barry Waddell of Evansville, Ind.; and teamowner/driver Tom Volk of Blissfield, Mich., did not even get to do one lapon Saturday. "It's a mechanical part and it failed; it happens sometimes," saidVolk. "It's not right, but it does happen. Todd [Hertel, the team's enginebuilder] spent more time on this engine than any other because he knew thepotential our team had here. It was a brand-new piston. Ninty-five out of100 times there is probably no problem, but it's a racing part andsometimes they break. There was probably something wrong with thatpiston's metallurgy. It's the cruelest possible outcome of this race forus; the money is already spent through testing and the expense of beinghere. We have a 100 percent finishing record over the past three years,and with this team and this driver line-up we felt we had a legitimateshot at the podium here."
CAR PARTS WHOLESALE : "It's a real shame," Schroeder concurred. "The car just lostpower. Todd gives us great engines all the time but sometimes engines letgo. It's nobody's fault. It's all part of the game. Sometimes cars sit onthe pole and then they're the first ones out. You just never know what'sgoing to happen but you have to take the bad with the good." The Indy Racing star described the start this way: "There was aspin up ahead of Duncan [Dayton, who started in front of him] and we allhad to take evasive action. [The car that spun was the Bob AkinMotorsports Riley & Scott Ford of Michael Lauer, Brian DeVries, NormanSimon and Mark Simo.] I had to get in the grass to make it through. Therewas a car that squeezed between me and the guardrail; I still don't knowhow he fit in there. I got hit. I thought it was in the side, but when Iclimbed out and looked at the car there is red paint on the exhaust, so Igot hit in the rear. It was pretty hairy."
