CAR PARTS SUPPLIERS : Land Rovers have been positioned as luxury vehicles here in the US,and consquently the dealers charge luxury vehicle prices forrepairs. That said, I will mention that servicing my AcuraIntegra hasn't been exactly cheap. Replacing the exhaust system(not the headers or the cat, but everything else) cost >$500 justin parts. And no, that wasn't at the dealer either. Sigh.I don't know about that particular engine, but many (most?) largerOHC engines don't use timing belts. Many use timing chains instead.Some of these need to be replaced periodically. Some do not.And yes, the consequences of a timing chain breaking can bethe same as that of a timing belt breaking. A friend broke thetiming chain in his BMW M6. The repair bill was ~$5000.
CAR PARTS SUPPLIERS : A Land-Rover V8 engine uses a chain - it isn't an OHC engine. The TDiengine uses a belt which should be changed at 50,000 miles. Theconsequences of a broken belt in a TDi (or the previous turbo diesel)are quite bad, but unlikely to cost $5000 to put right - you can buythe whole engine outright, including the intercooler and turbo for£2500.(opinions are my own, not necessarily those of my employer)Please remove the anti-spam measure from the return address.Keep in mind that these are dealer charges - you don't have to go tothe dealer. You can get an oil and filter change for $25 at anynumber of places. The 30K service should cost around $250-300 at agood service station (that's about what I paid). Again, replacing thefan blower motor should cost a lot less at a good service station (andthere are discount parts suppliers so you don't have to pay thedealers exorbitant prices). And replacing a headlamp is something youcan do yourself (and again, you can get the parts for less than thedealer charges).
CAR PARTS SUPPLIERS : Compare the Land Rover dealer charges to comparable service for aMitsubishi Montero, Toyota 4Runner, Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc. at adealership and you'll find that the prices at the Land Rover dealersaren't that high for servicing a SUV. Comparing to prices forservicing a car really isn't a fair comparison.If you mention where you live, I'm sure someone can suggest a goodlocal shop to use instead of the dealer (I know of a few inMassachusetts, Maine and Vermont). Since Land Rovers aren'tespecially common in the US, you would be well advised to buy afactory service manual (you can get this for around $40 from adiscount parts supplier such as Europarts) and let your local mechanicuse it when servicing your vehicle.The serpentine belt you describe is the accessory drive belt. It replaced thefour separate belts for water pump, air conditioning, power steering, andalternator on the earlier version of the engine. The Rover V-8 uses a timingchain instead of a belt to power the camshaft.

This is heavier, noisier, and moreexpensive to manufacture than a timing belt but it doesn't break. The LandRover Series III I bought new in 1973 and still drive today has the original,dual-row, timing chain in it. But a timing belt has to be replaced every 60Kto 80K miles. If you don't replace it at the proper time it will break, anddepending on the design of the engine, cause a huge amount of damage as thepistons slam up against the valves.

Dealer service and parts prices areastronomical because of the Land Rover's luxury image in this country. If youhave the tools and the talent, there are several very good independent LandRover parts suppliers in the US with prices much more realistic than thedealers, which automatically mark up every part price a minimum of 100 percent(all dealers, not just Land Rover). As an example, I had to have the frontbrake calipers on my 1991 Range Rover rebuilt when one of the piston sealsstarted seeping fluid. The dealer charge for this job would have been aminimum of $800. I pulled the calipers myself and sent them to the samecompany than rebuilds the calipers for the Land Rover, Mercedes, and BMWdealers in the Seattle area. They rebuilt them and I reinstalled the calipersa couple of days later. Total cost to me was $124 plus a few hours of mytime. Moral of the story is that if you are dependent upon the dealers foryour service and repair work, Land Rover ownership is very, very expensive.
